No. We did a destination wedding so the whole vibe was tropical. We also had an at home reception but no theme.

  • We did a red and white theme for his Swiss culture. Our wedding date was June 7, 2008 and it was an outdoor wedding. Unfortunately it was about 100 degrees that day. My poor 11 year old nephew nearly passed out during the ceremony. We did red and white M&Ms in clear plastic boxes with red or white ribbons on it. I made them myself and my mom made all the centerpieces and head table pieces. Instead of table numbers we did cities that DH and I visited together (Zurich, Emerald Isle, La Reunion, Paris, Hitchin) and put them in frames that we now use for family pics. Our reception was buffet style and really yummy. I gave my MOH a necklace though I should have paid for a trip to rehab that weekend.

Here is a pic from our wedding day:

Hi ladies! I am interested in your wedding and the details -

Did you have a theme? Nope

Colors/time of year? Fall, various shades of red with a little dark orange thrown in

    Guest amount/# in bridal party? 120ish, 4bms, 4 gms

Favors? Small white boxes with red and silver Hershey's kisses (regular, caramel, and something else... peanut butter maybe?)

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how? Bought plain white candles and printed the first letter of our last name on white vellum paper and edged the paper with red ribbon to attach it to the candle - our Unity Candle. Hard to describe, but I loved it.

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards? Nope, didn't do these.

What did you give as gifts for bridal party? DH gave his guys gift cards based on what they like (Best Buy, Old Navy, Restaurants, etc). I got small totes (also saved $$ here, bought the bags at Hobby Lobby and got a seamstress to monogram them - $5 each) and filled them with items of the same color. Ex: My sister got all things in Orange, my friend all in purple, etc. The items were like bath and body stuff, stationary, um, I don't remember the rest...

Any other additional info/suggestions you'd like to share with me would be awesome! TIA! You don't have to do everything. A budget is there for a reason, and you should choose now what is important to you and where you want your money to go, and let the other stuff go! Everyone will try to talk you into spending more money than you might want to; don't give in!

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards?  We didn't have anything like this...people sat wherever.

What did you give as gifts for bridal party?  the girls got sterling silver clam shaped jewelry boxes and the guys got sterling silver personalized koozies.

Personal touches:  The bouttonieres had little shells attached to them.  We did a sand ceremony instead of a unity candle.  We had 4 roses on the table next to the sand ceremony that we handed out to our loved ones in memory of people who had passed (for example, I gave my grandma a rose in memory of my grandpa who passed).

ETA:  I got our invitations from a lady who made them on ebay.  AWESOME and so inexpensive.

  • Did you have a theme?  Not really.  It was Super Bowl weekend in Vegas and we're football fans, so we "kinda" went that route.

Colors/time of year?  February.  Colors were red, silver and black.

Guest amount/# in bridal party? About 125 guests, 14 in bridal party including us.

Favors? We gave out personalized shot glasses that said "I went to E & H's wedding and all I got was this shot glass."  I thought it was SUPER cheesy at first, but DH insisted.  I've since found out from most of my guests that they still have them and love them.

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how?  We made our centerpieces.  Red hurricane candle holders from Pier 1 with silver bow on stem, candle, red rose petals (that we bought, not from the florist) and silver colored glass beads scattered around the base.

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards? Didn't have assigned seating.  I know, I know, this is supposedly one of the worst/un-classiest things you can do at a wedding, but we did it.

What did you give as gifts for bridal party? Boys got personalized flasks with their favorite NFL team and I gave the girls their customized jewelry to wear and paid for their hair and makeup.

Good luck to you!!  I absolutely loved planning my wedding.  I hope you have a wonderful time putting it together and it's not too stressful.

  • Did you have a theme? i dont think so

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how? i made the table numbers (photos of dh and I plus dog), my mom made the card box, invitations, i made a photo table of family members wedding photos, made an "i do" train for the card table.  i can't think of what else??

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards? oh yeah, we did glass votives for each couple or individual with their names and table number on them with different color ribbon corresponding with what menu item they chose.

What did you give as gifts for bridal party? assortment of pink items, bath things, photo frame/album, victorias secret body stuff and jewelry and the boys got a personalized "all in one" tool.

Any other additional info/suggestions you'd like to share with me would be awesome! TIA! check out the wedding boards.  i used to lurk over there and got tonssssssss of ideas....plus spend $$ on the ring and photographer...those are the only things that last

Colors/time of year?  red & Silver, Early April

Guest amount/# in bridal party? Uh, we invited close to 500, about 200 came (we live far from both familes) an we ach had 3 attendants, plus two jr bridesmaids, three flowergirls and a ring bearer (I wanted to include all of the neices and nephews)

Favors? Personalized pencils, and ribbon wands for the exiting the church

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how?  I made the ribbon wands, and the pew decoartions were reused from a cousin's wedding.  I also designed my own invitations and had them printed locally.  I don't know that they were any cheaper, but they were what I wanted. Oh, we also made the wedding mints and the centerpieces.

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards?  Didn't use these, but a friend had a fall wedding, and her theme was nature, her seating cards were leaf cutouts, the she had hanging from a tree in the entry, you had to find your name and cut it off the tree.  I thought it was really cute!

What did you give as gifts for bridal party?  The ladies got jewelery, I don't remember what DH got the guys.

Any other additional info/suggestions: dont stress about it, if soomething is not perfect, nobody is going to know except you.  Also, try as many bakeries as you can, to me it was just an excuse to eat free cake.  (Only do this if the samples are free)

    Have fun!

Colors/time of year? Thanksgiving weekend, Brown and caramel

Guest amount/# in bridal party? 110 guests, 6 bm, 4 gm

Favors? Since we had tons of extra cake; we bought cake boxes and put a pretty label on it and handed them out towards the end.

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how? I'm photoshop saavy, so I designed all my paperwork goods from STDs to invites. Sooo worth all the work, I spent very little $ and my pocket invites looked like a million bucks.

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards? Nope, I left them for the last minute, so just ended up buying a pack of fold cards at Michaels and again used photoshop to make them pretty

What did you give as gifts for bridal party? By the time we got to that part, I had just found out I was pg, so we kinda skipped on that. We invited them to dinner

I splurged on a very nice ballroom for the reception and on a big cake, that way I did not have to spend so much on decor and I'm soo glad, people were raving about how beautiful everything was.

  • Did you have a theme? Not really, the only thing that was really themed were the table names. Instead of numbering the tables, we named them after places in movies we loved, like Oz, Hogwarts, Metropolis.

Colors/time of year? Red, black and white. We got married in March- it was a winter wedding because it was like 4 days before Spring started. I refused to have a Spring wedding.

Guest amount/# in bridal party? We invited about 150 people, we each had 6 attendants and we had one flower girl.

    Favors? Bookmarks- cheap and practical.

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how? Not that I recall.

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards? I let people choose their own seats but they were assigned tables. As the walked into the tent they were told to check the tables for their names.

What did you give as gifts for bridal party? The guys got nice wooden boxes with their names engraved on them, the girls got the necklaces they wore in the wedding.

My advice to you is to make sure you do what YOU want. Don't let anyone else bully or guilt you into anything you do not want. Good luck!

Colors/time of year? Spring, green & pink

Guest amount/# in bridal party? about 100 guests.  About 6 people in the wedding party, I think.

Favors? Monopoly scratch-off tickets inside a "Chance" envelope.

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how? Not much.  We used Monopoly houses as place holders for escort cards.  We painted them green & pink ourselves.  We also decoupaged a box with Monopoly money for cards/envelopes.

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards?  See above.

What did you give as gifts for bridal party? Men: cufflinks; women: wrist purses

Any other additional info/suggestions you'd like to share with me would be awesome! TIA! Don't go crazy.  We spent much more $ than we should have.  Then again, we had an incredible time, and our wedding is a lovely memory.  Don't go cheap on photography.  The photos are what I loved best.

I blogged about my wedding over at Weddingbee, if you are interested.  You'll find great advice there!
  • imageekolenda:

Did you have a theme? We did sort of a "black tie" Masquerade theme. Everyone was supposed to dress formal, not costume-y, and I bought tons of nice masks online for the guests and then really expensive elaborate ones for the bridal party. I had a mini mask on my garter, mini masks as cake toppers that matched mine and DH's masks, and all of our table names were Masquerade related like the Venetian table, the Carnivale table, etc instead of numbers.

We bought a lot of the stuff we used from https://www.karnevalmasque.com/home.html. They do beautiful handmade stuff and will customize everything if you need it.

Colors/time of year? Black, ivory, gold, champagne. Late October.

Guest amount/# in bridal party? We had a small wedding - only about 40 guests, and 1 MOH and 1 Best Man.

Favors? Our favors were the seating cards and the full size masks for the guests that I bought.

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how? I'm a graphic designer so I made the invitations myself and sealed the envelopes with feathers and a wax seal. I also made the table name cards.

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards? We had the site I listed above make name cards using their mini piccolo masks in colors matching my theme. The masks had little golden banners glued to one side with the name and table scripted on them.

What did you give as gifts for bridal party? We paid for the BM's tux, my MOH's dress, and my bro's tux (walked me down the aisle), and I bought all of their very elaborate bridal party masks.

Any other additional info/suggestions you'd like to share with me would be awesome! TIA!

As much as I loved my theme, it was hard to get the rest of the guests really into it. A lot of DH's family is on the poorer side (no offense) and barely managed the dress code for a wedding. If you're going to pick a theme or do a destination wedding - make sure your guests can meet your expectations or be prepared to suck it up if they can't.

Also, we took out a small loan to help pay for everything. I loved my special day, so it was totally worth it, but sometimes I think back and wonder if it would have been cooler to have a quicker simpler wedding and spend that money on a bigger better honeymoon vacation...

Did you have a theme? Not really

Colors/time of year? Yellow (canary to be exact)/ Fall

    Guest amount/# in bridal party? 150 ish/ 3 girls 3 guys

Favors? Hershey's Hugs and Kisses in a bag with our name and date on it

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how?  I did all of our flowers and made the table decorations using California sand and seashellsI also made the thing that tells the order of the ceremony and who is in the wedding

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards? Didn't use them

What did you give as gifts for bridal party?  Girls - A picture frame for a picture of me and them during the wedding and necklace and earrings.  Guys - Swords with name engraved on them

Any other additional info/suggestions you'd like to share with me would be awesome! TIA!  We had the wedding and reception in the same place.  Saved a lot of time and money on decorating and plus out of town guests didn't have to get lost again trying to find the reception.

  • Did you have a theme? Not really. I wanted everything to be fun & springy, not so formal. (Tea length bridesmaid dresses, polka dotted ties, I wore fuschia pink high heels with my dress, gerbera daisies with lillies, NO roses, etc.)

Colors/time of year? Fuschia Pink/Orange - Spring (May)

    Guest amount/# in bridal party? Approx. 300 guests - 6 bridesmaids/groomsmen, 3 personal attendants/ushers, 1 flower girl/ring bearer.

Favors? We had can beer at our reception so we had can koozies for favors.

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how? I bought all my own decorations from Hobby Lobby thinking I would save money not having to hire a decorator, but by the time it was all said and done I spent just about the same. The only difference is that I have all these decorations that friends/family can use again or I can sell them to make back some of the money I spent.

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards? No. I just used poster board and cut out rectangles to fold in half and write the names on.

What did you give as gifts for bridal party? The guys got gift certificates & the girls got wall sayings (knock offs of uppercase living) I bought at Hobby Lobby.

Any other additional info/suggestions you'd like to share with me would be awesome! Hobby Lobby is a great place to buy things if you have one nearby. Every other week things go on sale (50% off!). You just need to know when to go. GL.

  • Did you have a theme? No

    Colors/time of year?  Victorian Lilac

Guest amount/# in bridal party? There was about 60 to 70 people in attendance.  We had four bridesmaids & groomsman.  I also had my six nieces and nephews in my wedding too.

Favors?  We made CDs of our favorite "love songs" for each of our guests.

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how?  I made all our CDs, printed out all the invitations, I bought all the flowers for our bouquets the night before from Costco and made them the morning of my wedding.  I only spent $100.00 on all my flowers and I got so many compliments on them.  I bought just a plain, simple white candle for our unity candle.  I made our wedding programs and borrowed all our reception decorations from a friend.

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards?  I didn't have seating cards...I don't like them, so I let my guests sit where they wanted.

What did you give as gifts for bridal party?  I bought all my bridesmaid's dresses, plus I bought them little jewelry boxes with their initials engraved.  My husband paid for all the tuxes, and I bought my nephew's suits (which they later wore for Easter).  I can't remember what my DH bought for his guys.  We bought each of our nieces and nephews a toy.

  • Oh, I also let my girls pick out the style of dress they wanted, because they all were very different in their body types.

  • Did you have a theme? um...not really...I used a palm tree logo on a lot of things tho.  We got married in Maui

    Colors/time of year? Brown/Pink, Summer

Guest amount/# in bridal party? 40 guests, including 3 bm and 3 gm

Favors? We weren't going to have favors, but MIL wants to do them so she got pineapple shaped cookies and put them in lauhala boxes.

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how? I did the programs, escort cards, table name cards, guestbook table sign, reserved seating cards, a 'card box' sign to go on a small birdcage that i bought, i wrapped palm fans in ribbon and made little tags with our names and wedding date, we gave welcome bags to each of the guests and i made tags for those with their names and their names in Hawaiian....i'm sure there are a couple other things that i'm forgetting right now....

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards?  We used starfish and tied the names/tables to them with ribbon

What did you give as gifts for bridal party?  The guys and FIL went golfing at the Plantation golf course in Kapalua, the girls and moms each got $200 to use at the Spa Moana at the Hilton in Maui.

Any other additional info/suggestions you'd like to share with me would be awesome! You can see more pictures, etc by clicking the blue link below in my siggy Smile

  • Did you have a theme? Winter

Colors/time of year? Royal Blue and White

Guest amount/# in bridal party? 150 and 4 on each side

    Favors? None, actually

Did you make anything yourself to save $? If so, what and how? Centerpieces were glass bowls with fake snow and blue and silver ornaments in them. My mom also made white fur muffs (instead of flowers for the girls) and white fur shawls with satin ribbons.

Anything creative for escort cards/seating cards? My dad thought it would be funny to have table names instead of numbers, and he made them all the names of Jethro Tull songs. The one on the head table was Warchild because my mom thought I was a horrible bride, even though it was 100% her. I think she was having troubles letting me go.

What did you give as gifts for bridal party? Cold weather/cuddle/ snowflake themed items. A nice scarf, snowflake coasters, snowman candles and hot cocoa--to keep warm with your honey.

  • Oh, and we printed our own invitations at a copy place. Just bought the paper at archivers. And programs.
