My cousin gave me this idea. She said she wished she would have done it before her LO was born. I'm thinking about buying a baby doll and start carrying it around here and there and telling my dogs "gentle" and saying "baby" to them a lot in preparation for our new arrival. That way they get used to seeing me with a little person in my arms and they will hopefully know to be careful and not jump.... what do you think?
Re: Idea for incorporating LO & pets
It can't hurt. What dogs usually respond really well to is scent. Have someone bring a blanket or piece of clothing that the baby has been wearing home to your dogs while you're still in the hospital. Let the dogs smell it as often as possible. They will recognize the smell when the baby comes home.
I didn't have any problems with my dog but he is really laid back. For some more hyper-active or AW dogs your idea might work and get them used to you giving attention to something else.
we did it and i think it worked pretty good. it helped to keep them from jumping on dh etc. we also put it in the crib etc. another thing is train them to just go for their "toys" not baby's toys-set them down on the floor together and ask the dog to find "their toy." offer treats. a dozen times is all it took-our dogs have touched her toys maybe a handful of times in 2 plus years. also have the "alpha" in your family carry baby into the house when you come home is another good tip as the dogs will know that baby is a member of the "pack." our dogs are great with our dd and these are a few things we did with them. they don't even go in her room unless dh or i are in there-and even then it is pretty rare that they enter "her space." she can climb on them, sit on them, lay against them etc.
oh and play with their food when they eat, pull ears and tails and we crawled on the floor a lot so they got use to seeing someone down at their level quite a bit.
I have heard about the baby before and we've been trying to find a real good crying baby so they get used to having noise and not barking everytime but i've had no luck.
I've also heard that the if you are the one who really provides (food, water..) then your spouse should introduce the LO to your pet.
