How do you move from Bronze poster to Silver?

I just noticed that I'm a Silver poster, but I'm not sure when I made the jump from Bronze. Is it based on number of posts or "points"? And WTH are the points anyway?

It shouldn't matter but I do feel silly being called a newbie. My points started over when I changed my name. I don't post a massive amount anymore since all those questions and answers doled out on Babies on the Brain.
