As a preface, sorry this took so long. Michael is now 12 days old. I now have a new appreciation for the ladies that have their birth stories up hours after they deliver...
On Friday (6-26) a little before 8am I got up and went to the bathroom. Normal ritual those last few days were to stand in front of the mirror and rub my belly telling Michael that he could come out anytime now. Well, my water broke as I was telling him that the eviction notice had been served.
I stood there for about 10 minutes trying to make sure that it was my water and that I hadn't peed all over myself. I called my mom/DH and OB. I wasn't having any real contractions. Doctor advised me to go ahead in to the hospital.
Got to the hospital around 9:30am. I was 50% effaced and 3cm dilated It was rather painless and uneventful until they started Pitocin at 3pm. Contractions started coming and I asked for my epidural at 5pm. Anesthesiologist came in with the epidural and after about 30mins went by without any pain relief whatsoever they decided the epidural didn't take and called the anesthesiologist in for another try. By then it was around 8pm and I was 4cm dilated. The second epidural also failed.
In the 40 minutes the anesthesiologist was trying to give me the epi I went from 4 cm to 7 cm and became completely effaced. Coming to the realization that I was going to have to give birth naturally terrified me and probably did nothing but intensify the pain. The doctor finally came in and told me that I could push.
It took about 20 minutes from the time I started pushing until the time Michael came out. And I now have a completely new appreciation to the women who knowingly go to the hospital and desire a natural labor!
Michael Edmond was born on 6-26-09 at 10:41pm. He weighed 7lbs 6oz and measured 19.5 inches long. He was a healthy baby boy with the exception of jaundice. We had to stay an extra day and Michael had to stay under the billy lights to help his jaundice go down. We came home from the hospital on the following Monday (6-29).
Everything is well and good but the jaundice is taking a while to go away completely and he has had a hard time regaining his birth weight. From 7'6 he went down to 6'8 and at the doctors yesterday he was back to 7'1. If anyone has any experience with jaundice particularly what they call bfing jaundice (which is what the pedi believes he probably has) I'd love to hear about your experience.
Re: My Birth Story....(better late than never I suppose)PIP
Congrats! Sorry to hear about the epi. I don't know if I would try for a 2nd time!
