MOTN diaper changes

I was curious what everyone does about wet diapers at night. I know of some people who left them because it meant waking up the baby and others who change (because, well, they need to be changed).

I change her, but she is super wide eyed after and no amount of nursing would put her back to sleep. On the rare occasion that she doesn't need a change the transition from breast to bed is SO much smoother.

I just wondered what everyone else was doing.

  • We change DD before the MOTN feeding so she can go right back to bed afterwards. She hates being in a wet diaper (even the tiniest bit wet) unless she is already deep asleep, so if she needs to be changed after she eats, she will let us know, in which case we change her again and then rock her to sleep.

  • A lot of the time my LO poops after eating so I feed then change. Luckily in the MOTN he is out and usually stays sleeping while I change him or even of he wakes I don't interact with him just change then once he's back on my chest a couple patts on the back and he's right back out.

Dd doesn't fully wake up, she just grunts a certain way so I pick her up out of pnp put on boob till she breaths heavy then put her back in pnp and change diaper quickly there. She is usually already crashing when I button pajamas. I think the key is low light and no talking. Plus dont wait to feed when LO is crying, try to catch grunting but I'm a light sleeper and she's next to the bed. I also have warm wipes but I won't use them motn for wet only since the diaper already dried it. I also do baths in the morning

  • I feed, change, offer other boob. Sometimes he eats again, sometimes not. If he doesn't I put him back in his swaddle and he falls back asleep in a few minutes. Otherwise he eats, passes out, then I swaddle.

  • We change him before each motn feeding. We don't change him if he doesn't wake up to eat. So he may be sleeping with a dirty diaper but we don't wake him up solely to change him

  • I change once, sometimes twice during the night, depending on how wet she feels. That way she doesn't get too roused, nurses quick and passes back out.

With DD1 I changed every feeding. And every feeding took an hour or more before she was back down. I learned my lesson pretty quickly.

  • I definitely change if he pooped but sometimes change if it's just pee. My guy likes to scream a lot of the time with diaper changes which keeps him up for a long time even if I feed him after.

  • Unswaddle, change if needed, feed, rock/burp, re-swaddle and then put her down half awake. She usually puts herself back to sleep within 10 minutes. I can usually change a pee diaper without her fully waking…I go slow and gentle and don't talk and lights stay very low. Poop she wakes up for but gets sleepy again while nursing.

At her 2 month check yesterday the pedi was telling me I should start ignoring* her grunting at night and see if she goes back to sleep without feeding. I told him she often poops and that is what wakes her up…he said to lube her up really good with diaper creme before bed and she would be ok until morning. I am not sure how I feel about that :-S

    * He said to ignore grunting…but if she is actually crying to soothe her. Not suggesting CIO in any way.
  • If he wakes, he is changes then fed. If he doesn't wake up I don't either.

Same here. She hasn't woken up overnight for a couple of weeks (thank you, baby gods!), so we don't disturb her. If she were to wake up, I'd change (low light) and then feed.

Someone told me to try that once, but I'm not comfortable just leaving her in a dirty diaper all night. Luckily she doesn't poop at night.
Grunting for my LO means she'll be up soon or is just rolling over. So if she rolls I know I'm good, if she's just laying there kicking I know I have to get up.

  • Unswaddle, change diaper, swaddle, feed, rock, bed.  :)

This. I also find that i have to "ignore"
Some grunting because it's usually just him dreaming. I've woken him up to many times thinking he was already awake.
  • Unswaddle, change, feed, swaddle, rock, bed.

This process usually takes over an hour, most of it is trying to get her back to sleep. I wonder if I should swaddle after changing and feed her when she's swaddled.  I guess I always just figured I should give her a chance to stretch out but she ends up waking up when I swaddle her before putting her down, when she's half asleep after feeding.  I bet skipping that step would make it easier for her to go back down. hmmm....

  • @kwrecks sounds very similar to our MOTNs except I don't change the diaper every time. I also have to unswaddle for the feed because otherwise I can't get a good burp out of her and if she's not burped, I know she'll be squealing within the hour.
  • Eat one side, change, eat other side.  Although sometimes we need the diaper change to wake LO up enough to keep eating.  When I let him just go back to sleep after one side he is up again in 2 hours to eat the other half of his meal.  If we do both sides at one feeding he will sleep longer.  That being said if he wakes up twice during the night, the second feeding (around 4:30am) doesn't get a change.  If he doesn't seem to mind it can wait until the 6:30 change.
  • @lokilahve - DS grunts randomly all night long. We only get him if he cries out (even if it's just one yelp). Sometimes his grunting wakes me and I get up and get ready for a cry but then come back to find him silently sleeping. He sometimes goes 2 more hours before he actually wakes up. I don't think that ignoring grunting is bad for the child. When he grunts he's usually still asleep anyway.

We unswaddle, change diaper, feed, burp, rock, change again if needed, swaddle, and put back to bed.

I ignore the grunting unless there is some rustling around and crying involved cause that means he is hungry. I am learning his cues.

  • Thanks ladies! The changing between boobs (not literally, hah) sounds like a good idea, I'll try that tonight and see how it goes.
