2nd Trimester

are you taking off work early or

working until you go into labor? im due dec 12 and im debating if the day before thanksgiving as my last day is too early (about 2.5 weeks before im due, dr. will not let me go more than a week past my due date, so at most 1 month before baby comes).

i will be a SAHM mom after the baby is born, and i have 3 weeks of paid vacation i would use during this time on top of 21 weeks maternity leave. i just feel i will want that time to finish up whatever i need to do around the house, and mostly relax since i wont be getting any sleep once LO comes.i feel id be too stressed working full time until the very end. just wondering what the rest of you are doing!

Re: are you taking off work early or

  • I'm leaving Oct. 2nd (EDD is Oct. 15th) or if I go into labor before -- whichever comes first. I'm leaving the job, so it doesn't matter. The sooner the better, really!!

  • I'm kind of up in the air.  I still have a crap load of vacation time to take, but I'm not sure if I want to take it a bit at a time over the summer or save it all and use it to start my mat leave early.

That sounds great.  I say if you can do it, do it.  You'll be so much more relaxed and have time to really feel like you're ready once LO arrives.  (I don't know about you but I still feel like I have a million things to get done first.)

I honestly haven't decided yet.  My major source of income is financial aid from school so I will be in classes still but I haven't decided if I'm going to leave work early yet.

  • I plan on working until I go into labor or just can't do it anymore (I'm a nurse).  I want to save up as much paid time off as I can so I can spend as much time with the baby as possible.
  • i'm working up until the last minute and dont plan on being on maternity leave for very long.  my maternity leave will be cut short b/c i'll be working from home for a few weeks before coming back into the office.
  • I'd say just take off when you can - I.E. around thanksgiving! Especially if you're not coming back. Give yourself some time off to enjoy your last little bit without a screaming baby, and to prepare more for him/her!

  • I am not going back to work either. I probably will work up until I am in labor.

  • I'm starting my maternity leave the week I'm due.
  • I'm due Oct 21st and am only working till Sept 18th.  But given that we get 52 weeks of maternity leave here, giving yourself 4-6 weeks off before the birth is sort of the norm.
  • we get 4 weeks before... and i plan on using it! I honestly think just taking the time for yourself and getting all the finishing touches on everything will make the time worth while!
  • i am going out 3w early and i cant wait!! My bp is starting to get up there and im on my feet all day in the retail world, so its time. Plus its hot as hell, outside and in my store. I have to shower a second time when i get home from work because i am so gross!!

  • I guess i will all depend on how I'm feeling and how much vacation time I have left come year end.
  • My last day will be October 30th and my edd is November 8th.
  • I am going to stop working 4 weeks pre EDC, and I cant wait!! lol
  • Do you have 21 weeks of paid leave?  If not what is the point since you are not planning to go back.  I don't understand: How can you even be motivated to go in and do your job for the next few months if you know you aren't staying there?  Do they know your not staying?

  • Since you're leaving the job I'd say LUCKY to be taking 2.5 to rest and finish up anything else you might have to do. I have to use my vacation/ sick time before my disability will kick in so I'm going to work until I go into labor unless otherwise told.
  • We're shooting for the end of October so I will probably take off around mid-October.

I drive 1 hr+ each way to work and my doctor is not exactly comfortable with me being that pregnant and driving that far everyday.

I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and say that paychecks are the motivation for going in.  That's the only thing that gets my ass to work every morning, even though I know I'm not coming back after she gets here.

We get paid leave even if we aren't going back.  Just how it works here.  I don't have to make a decision about going back until the end of my 52 weeks though, so I haven't told them I'm not staying.  I want to make sure I like SAH first.

  • I'm "retiring" 2 months before my due date since I am planning to SAHM.  It wasn't worth it to me to stay through maternity leave since it would have put my office in a bad situation.  I wanted to leave on good terms and figured I would appreciate the extra time to get ready before the baby arrives.
  • I am going to take my due date as my last day. We tend not to have on time babies in our family and since I'm due December 18th (which is a Friday) That will be my last day of work.

After the baby arrives, I'll be working from home part time a few days a week. :) I can't wait!!!

I'm a nurse too, and I also plan on working right up until my due date.  That's mostly because I don't have that much vacation time.  My main goal right now is to have off for the holidays, or possibly through New Year's, and I guess that's about 8 weeks.  I'm going back to full time right afterward, too.

July 1 was my last day/1st day of disability. My EDD is July 14, but I have a c-section scheduled for July 10 because my LO is breech. It's been great having the last 2 weeks off. I highly recommend it. I've been on email here and there, which was helpful in getting my co-workers used to not having me in the office. It's just great to have the time to catch up on laundry, deep cleaning and relaxing with a book. Best of all are my afternoon cat naps. My body needs it!

Its strange how different things are here. I get to take vacation and sick time at 100% pay and then some additional pay for FMLA.  I plan to be back at work in 3 months or less.

Anyway, since I'm salaried the paychecks don't carry much weight week to week.  I can show up at 10 take two hr lunch and leave at 3:30pm and get nothing done but still get paid. I don't do that because I'd like to maybe get raises and/or promotions and keep my job long term. I am struggling with this not for lack of trying but I've just been forgetful and out of my normal brain power.

So the question isn't about literally going in or not but how do you perform?  Have you ever heard of short-timer's syndrome?

But then again I struggle with the whole stay-at-home concept all together. .

  • Due date is the 17th and I plan on having Nov 6th as my last day of work. Altho I have a desk job I commute 2 hrs a day so I will also have to see how I feel. I might have to take that into consideration depending on how uncomfortable I'll be.
  • I am due Jan. 11th.  Fortunately my company has holiday shut down from 12/24 to 1/2.  I'll start my maternity leave on Jan 3 but my last day of work will be 12/23 ( and I may use 3 vaca days that week to be out earlier ) !  Nice deal.  I'll get back to work the beginning of April.

  • I'm working until labor. I might as well. I'm delivering in the hospital I work in, so all I have to do is walk upstairs if it happens at work.

wow!oyu are lucky, I have only 12 weeks of maternity leave-UNPAID!

so I will try to work till the very end

  • I'll be working as long as I can. DH is a student with no income, and my maternity leave is unpaid, so we're trying to save up some money so that we can still pay our bills, and I can have a few weeks off after delivery. I'd love to have a couple of weeks off beforehand, but I think I'd rather have more time off afterwards. Unless December gets here and we wind up having 3 months worth of my salary in savings. In that case, I'd take off early, use my remaing sick/vacation days before delivery, then have my 12 weeks maternity leave after.

  • I'm only 15 weeks pregnant right now so things may change in my planning but I am planning on starting leave about December 10th my due date is December 27th. I will have about 2.5 weeks of paid vacation time and then we get paid leave from dec 24-jan 1 so I will be starting my maternity leave Jan 2 which is 8-10 weeks paid at 100% of my salary and then I have the rest in EI which is something like 55% of my salary for up to 52 weeks I believe. I don't know that I will actually take the entire 52 weeks on EI since I would much rather be making full salary and have full benefits and paid vacation time but I haven't yet decided how long I want off. I know that I plan on returning to work for sure though.

  • My last day is October 1. I'm du th 17th of October though, and I won't be returning. Better to take time off before baby is due!
  • Sorry, I got distracted.... 21 weeks maternity leave?  I couldn't even scroll down to read responses I just had to reply.  I want 21 weeks maternity leave when my company knows I'm going to be a SAHM.  How'd you get that?  Federal FMLA is 12?
  • I am due Dec 29th, and I had originally planned to be done Dec18th, that way with the holidays and vacation i would still get paid for the entire month. Well now that I just got my hours cut in half, my vacation is also cut. And since we are making some living changes that frees up large parts of the budget I think I might get to be a SAHM, so I think I might just peace out on Dec1st.

  • I plan to work right up until I pop... but we'll see. I have a part-time job at a school, so if I take off during Winter Break and a few days after that, it should lead up to my due date... and the day I would be due back is actually the first day of Spring Break. So there, I will get a 14 1/2 week break. With my full-time job, no fat chance of any special treatment. So I am going to be stuck here so I can have as much time home with the baby as possible before I come back. Although the last girl who went on Maternity Leave here isn't being offered her job back (even though the person hired for her position is leaving as well) because my boss doesn't want to pay her as much as he did before her leave.

Oh, and I'm not covered by FMLA, so I'm taking 12 weeks unpaid with the risk of losing my job as well.

  • i plan on working right up until the end... we've joked about my water breaking in the office and who will drive me to the hospital...
  • I am working until the bitter end but that is because I have no vacation time and maternity leave is unpaid.  I am hoping to save 3 months salary so I can take 12 weeks off.  Wish me luck!
