My MIL has been known to do this sometimes too. So sweet! But I hate showing her anything though for fear she will buy it and I will feel like I am taking advantage of her. (DH has no problem of course, but she's his mother)

This! She asked me what we still really needed the other day, and I told her, honestly, we really need a carseat. So she got it for us (so very, very relieved!) And of course DH has no problem asking for things

That was sweet of her and it sounds like you are lucky. I wish I had a sweet MIL. Instead mine complains that my mother leaves her nothing to buy for the baby. In reality there are plenty of things we could use for the baby and she hasn't offered to buy one thing not even a pack of diapers. We don't expect anyone to buy stuff but don't complain when others do.
Re: Sweet MIL
I cant believe that people use the words "sweet" and "mil" in the same sentence, unless the sentence was "My MIL has passed away....sweet"
Hooray for you though, I wish I had a sweet MIL. Mine makes me want to rip my face off.
