Antibiotics causing diahrrea?

Ivy just started antibiotics for her UTI last night and she's had wicked diahrrea ever since...someone in my office said they're related. I have a call into the pedi, but has anyone heard this?

Re: Antibiotics causing diahrrea?

  • DD was put on Augmentin and had diahrrea for a day or two. TMI but it was green and watery. The paper from the Pharmacy said that if there was diarrhea it was because the body was getting used to the antibiotic.

  • DS always gets diarrhea with antibiotics.  It lasts as long as he's on it, and a day or so afterwards.  I usually try to give him lots of bananas to bind things and yogurt to make sure he still has the good probiotics in his tummy.

  • Yes, DS had diahrrea the first two days on amoxicillan.  I called the pedi, they said it was normal.
  • I wasnt too worried - glad to hear this is normal. Thanks! Just makes for some lovely diaper changes...my hubby can do them!
  • yep, it's normal for anyone.. not just babies. It can be harsh on sensitive stomachs and it doesn't help that it attacks all bacteria (good or bad). Like pp mentioned, yogurt helps with the bacteria, and bananas (or the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast) is great too.

  • we give DS Florastor of kids when he is on antiB (his tummy gets all messed up and then his butt is the next on the messed list) We give him 1/2 a packet 2x a day. It helps.
