1st Trimester

The first time you heard the heartbeat...

If it was with a doppler and not during an ultrasound...

Did the doctor do it randomly at an appt. or did they schedule it specially for tying to hear the heartbeat?

I had my first u/s at 8w6d so too early to have heard on u/s and they didn't even try (although we saw it).  I don't have my next ultrasound until 18-20 weeks so I'm wondering when they will let us hear the heartbeat.

I have my second appt. on Friday at 11w4d and I'm curious if she will try and find the heartbeat for us. I'd hate to have to wait until my anatomy scan to hear it =(

Usually the doctor will try to use the Doppler at the appointment that falls closest to 12 weeks. It's unlikely that you will have to wait all the way until 18 wks to hear the HB. If you want to, you can just ask at your next appt. The Doppler is just a small, handheld device and needs no special preparation to try it out. The only reason they would refuse is if they think it's too early, but you have a good chance at almost 12 weeks.

  • Thanks. This is my first pregnancy and I obviously have a lot to learn. I wasn't sure if they had a doppler in the office or if they would send me to the office where they do ultrasounds.
  • With my daughter, I first heard the h/b on the doppler when I fell on my stomach at around 13 weeks and went to get checked out. There were no openings with my OBs, so I saw my primary care doc instead. (My OBs and my PCP were in the same practice, so I switched between them for prenatal care.) She used the doppler to find the heartbeat. Like pp said, it doesn't require any special preparation. My docs used it at every appointment after that.

I fully expect that my midwife will try to find it at my next appointment -- I'll be just shy of 11 weeks. I hope I hear it because that's still pretty early...

  • My doc just randomly tried at my last appointment at 9 weeks - I was very nervous because I knew it was SO early to even be trying, but we ended up hearing it for a few seconds.

From what I understand, at every appointment I have from now on they will listen with the doppler, so they probably will for you on Friday, especially if you specifically ask.

  • I heard it first on the ultrasound at 8w0d.  She just turned it up so we could hear it.  At my 12w0d appointment, we heard it with the doppler.  It  took a while to find because of a tilted uterus, but it was there and strong.  They will most likely try that at each 4 week appt.  Don't be nervous if it takes a while to find!
  • The first time we listened with a doppler was at 15w4d or my third appointment.
  • They're supposed to use the doppler to listen on me at my next appointment.  That will put me at 15 weeks.

  • I heard it for the first time at my NT scan at 12 weeks 2 day.

  • My doc had a doppler in office. I would imagine most do. We heard the heartbeat for dc#1 at 10w and 3d or 4d pg. Don't worry if you can't hear it that early though. Some don't hear it until 14 weeks or so via doppler. After hearing it that first time we listened at every appointment after.

  • First time for me was with a doppler at my 14 week appt.  And then at every other appt from that point on.
  • I heard it at my 1st appt @ 9 wks and then again @ 13 wks (with the doppler both times). I'm sure you will get to hear it @ your 11 wk appt.
