Getting DC to take medicine?

Give me your best tricks for getting DC to take medicine.  I've tried putting it in Evie's bottle and she won't drink it, even if we just do a half dose at a time.  We've tried mixing it with sorbet.  We've tried mixing it with pudding.  We've tried forcing her to swallow it, and she makes herself throw up.  It's critical that she takes this medicine, so we have to figure out something, but I'm out of ideas.

  • What kind of medicine is it? Antibiotics?

  • I've heard that you can get the pharmacist to add flavoring to liquid medicines (I assume it's liquid) for about $1 extra. You might check into that. Otherwise, I lay DD on the changing table to give medicine and she's no trouble so I'm not much help.

    Yep.

  • wow I can't believe she won't take it in any of those forms.  I was going to suggest the pharmacist flavoring it for you.

What if you put it in juice or something different that she normally doesnt' drink?  So that way she wouldn't know the flavor had changed?

I know that when they're littler, if you use a dropper and put it way back along the side of their cheek, that helps.  But gosh you'd have to have someone hold her down to do that.   And that sounds awful.

Ben's a really good medicine taker.  He loves it.  He likes drinking out of those little cups.  And we have chewable tylenol and motrin and he thinks that's a treat.  So I'm not much help...

  • Tell your Dr. she won't take it and see if there is a shorter course of something else that could work. Dropper in the side of the mouth works. When Logan was little (like 3-10 mos) we would blow a little into his mouth and it would sort of force it down. (a trick dh's boss used with his 4 kids.) have you tried little med cup? Sit her at the table give her the cup and explain how important it is to make her feel better and be healthy. Amoxicillian and penicillian are a pain since you have to take it for so long and usually 3 times a day but they well for kids but only if they take them. Logan took zithromax as a kid. Shorter treatment and only once a day. May be worth it to ask.

  • Maybe mix it in with crushed ice, like a snow cone. The coldness might disguise the flavor a bit and numb her mouth.

  • Make it as cold as you can (if that's safe for that med) as that does numb the flavor, like pinktulips said. I also know the side of the mouth works, definitely not straight down the back of the throat as that can cause vomiting. Ugh, I'm sorry you're having such a hard time, I hope it gets better!

  • Also, if I remember correctly with antibiotics and kids - any that makes it down is better then nothing.

The pharmacy in downtown Snoqualmie will make custom flavors for you (it is a compounding pharmacy)
