I have a Canon Poweshot and I love it. I wanted a DSLR but with my inexperience I figured I would start out with a point and shoot that has some manual settings like a DSLR.
It takes really good pictures and is very easy to use. I had a KOdak before and it wasn't very good either.
Going to recommend the Canon Powershot, too! It takes great pictures, Digital Macro and everything! I get better pictures on my point&shoot than people do with their fancy DSLR's!
I think Canon is awesome. I have had fabulous luck and gotten great pics with them. I now have the Canon Rebel digital SLR but before have had their point and shoots and they really are great.

I have a Canon Rebel XSi and a Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS. I love them both for different reasons. The Rebel is big and has so much you can do with it. It takes great pictures. The PowerShot is tiny and I take it with me everywhere. I keep it in my wristlett and take pictures at the mall, park, zoo, ect. I can fit it in my pocket which is a huge plus when I'm out with ds alone and trying to run after him.

Canon Powershots are always a good bet. I have a Casio Exilim 7mp that I have had for 5 years and have never had a single problem with it. I also have a NIkon D80, but I am getting the impression you want a P&S. The P&S I want now is the Canon D10...waterproof to 30ft (also great by a pool or when raining), shatterproof (you can drop it and it will survive). It just came out in April and gets really good ratings
Jumping on the Canon bandwagon....I have a Canon Powershot SD790 and I LOVE it. I previously had a Nikon S210 and ditched it after 6 months for this Canon. Excellent picture quality, neat features, and it's small enough to put in my purse or our backpack for day trips. I have a larger Panasonic that works great and use to be my primary camera but I have barely touched it since I bought my Canon.
I think I'm in the minority here, but I hate my Cannon PowerShot (I have the SD800 IS). It doesn't takes forever to actually 'take' the picture, but it takes just a split second too long imo, and unless the flash is on, if there is any movement, your shot ends up out of focus. I also feel like naturally lit photos have a grainy quality unless the lighting is really bright, but then when I use the flash, I'm constantly getting washed out pics so it's a lose/lose. I am looking at investing in a DSLR. I've been looking at the Canon Rebel or the Nikon D60.
