Re: RP: Solids questions for 6ish monthers!
1. She ate cereal for a little bit but hated it so we moved on quickly. She hasn't had it since 6.5 months.
2. She is still only eating 1 meal a day but has a couple snacks. She isn't a big eater.
3. No, we only ever warmed cereal and she doesn't eat that anymore.
4. N/A (I buy it)
5. 2-4 ounces depending on her mood
6. No
1. We started solids at 4 months but she still eats rice cereal sometimes mixed with fruit and everynight in her bedtime bottle.
2. DD started eating 3 jars of stage 2 baby food a day at 6 months per the pedi and is still eating the same amount of jars at 8 months.
3. I never warm baby food, she likes everything cold or at room temperature, inculding her bottles.
4. I by baby food so this really doesn't apply to me. I never freeze it I just put it in the fridge if she doesn't finish a jar.
5. She usually eats 1 jar per sitting, 3 times a day.
6. I don't think it has changed her sleeping habits at all. She has been STTN since 3 months for the most part. Although I am having a little bit of sleep trouble now due to teething and seperation anxiety.
1) if you delayed solids until 6 months, do you STILL do oatmeal/rice cereal or do you just skip it? I am confused by this
I started solids at 5 months and did only cereal (once a day for a week and then twice a day for three weeks) until 6 months. I still do cereal in the morning and at night, but now I give him fruit with his cereal and veggies separately.
2) how often does your baby eat solids ?
Usually 3x per day. Fruit/cereal in the morning and at night, and a veggie for lunch.
3) does baby food HAVE to be warmed?
No. Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't.
4) how do you defrost frozen baby food (and heat if necessary according to #3) how can you do this with no microwave?
I buy Earth's Best baby food, and warm it in the microwave.
5) how much does your LO eat at each sitting? I feel like grant ate 2 freaking mouthfuls, if even that!
I jar of veggies (2.5oz) or 1-2 tablespoons of cereal plus half a jar of fruit.
6) did introducing solids change your baby's sleep habits at all?
No. He STTN before and still does.

1) I started with rice cereal at 6 months. It is very mild and unlikely to cause any reaction - so that's what we started with.
2) We went from once a day to twice a day pretty quickly - and we are still parked at twice a day - with no plans to make any changes in the immediate future.
3) I usually warm it just enough to take the chill off if it's been refrigerated - or until it's "lukewarm".
4) I microwave frozen food all the time. You just have to then stir it really well - and test some on your hand to make sure it's not hot. You don't nuke the crap out of it - you just defrost it - which leaves some parts of it pretty warm, and others still quite cold - so once you vigorously mix it - it's fine - and you just test it.
5) Not a ton. And some days he still eats more/less than others. It just depends.
6) Not at all.
"When it comes to sleeping, whatever your baby does is normal. If one thing has damaged parents enjoyment of their babies, it's rigid expectations about how and when the baby should sleep." ~ James McKenna, Ph.D., Mother Baby Behavioral Sleep Center, University of Notre Dame
1. I've skipped rice cereal. Basically it's not really necessary though it is fortified with some vitamins and minerals. But you can always be sure your baby's diet has those vitamins and minerals instead. I am trying oatmeal, but the first time I offered it to her it was too thick and she wasn't doing well on it.
2. I'm still only doing 1x a day.
3. No. I think she likes it better that way, but I'm trying to get her used to room temp and slightly cold too.
4. I'm a bad mommy and haven't done homemade baby food yet.
5. I am still doing half a jar of baby food, half a tub of yobaby yogurt.
6. Sleep habits still seem the same to me. Except she doesn't nap as much during the day.

2) how often does your baby eat solids ? Oatmeal Cereal in the morning, rice cereal at night (I find it helps to bind her so she doesn't poop until the morning). Once we start veggies, I'm doing cereal + fruit for breakfast, a veggie for lunch, and cereal for dinner. It'll be changing as she gets used to new stuff. I got a sample menu from wholesomebabyfood.com
3) does baby food HAVE to be warmed? Warmed? No. Room temperature? Yeah. No one wants to have cold puree *gags*
4) how do you defrost frozen baby food (and heat if necessary according to #3) how can you do this with no microwave? I have some glass prep bowls with tight-fitting lids (yay pampered chef products!), so I'll put the food cube in the sealed bowl and put in the fridge overnight. Then when I want to serve it, I'll put that bowl in a larger bowl of hot water to warm it up a bit.
5) how much does your LO eat at each sitting? I feel like grant ate 2 freaking mouthfuls, if even that! She hardly touched it at first, and now she's finishing the entire serving. If it's rice, watch out she'll practically throw herself at the spoon
6) did introducing solids change your baby's sleep habits at all? Nope. She actually sleeps LESS. Like Lanie said, it gave my babe new gas pains and changed her poop schedule (so sometimes she'd have a blowout poop at 4am). Good times.
1) if you delayed solids until 6 months, do you STILL do oatmeal/rice cereal or do you just skip it? I am confused by this
We started solids a little over 4 months but i still tell my patients to start with the rice cereal when they do start solids. I do not think it is a big deal to be honest either way. It is more important to do things one at a time to watch for any reactions.
2) how often does your baby eat solids ?
C eats 2 meals a day now, but at first we did just once (dinnertime).
3) does baby food HAVE to be warmed?
Nope we just serve room temp, unless it has been in the fridge. At first we warmed it b/c he likes things warm!
4) how do you defrost frozen baby food (and heat if necessary according to #3) how can you do this with no microwave? - we do it in the micro, 20-25 seconds on medium
5) how much does your LO eat at each sitting? I feel like grant ate 2 freaking mouthfuls, if even that!
He eats about a jar in the morning and a jar and a half in the evening.
6) did introducing solids change your baby's sleep habits at all? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. The only thing that did was CIO.
7) I started out by mixing the cereal with bm and he hated it. So when we do it, we just mix with water and then add fruit. We don't do cereal much these days- I send the Earth's best fruit with cereal in it to daycare for his morning meal. Dinner is usually a veggie and half a fruit. We just started meats.
1) Same starter foods apply, so rice cereal is fine, banana, other starter fruits or cereals. We tried rice cereal for a few days, but no dice, so we went to banana which was met with much rejoicing.
2) Once a day or less. At this point it is just about trying new things and developing taste, not nutrition. It does not replace BF, and we only feed solids shortly after nursing. I'm not interested in weaning yet!
3) No, just baby's preference. DS likes warm or room temp, though.
4) I would guess just thaw in fridge or run under hot water in a baggie. I have only done rice cereal and fresh banana, so have not crossed this bridge yet.
5) Tiny tiny amounts. Like I said (and this is from pedi as well), it isn't about nutrition. Less than a T. He should only eat until it's not fun anymore.
6) Nope.
1) DS is 12 months and we still do cereal sometimes, but we mix it w/yogurt and I buy the cereal w/fruit too. We also do just regular instant oatmeal.
2) We always offered solids whenever we sat down for a meal, so most of the time 3x a day. However, DS did not take to solids at all until 10 months.
3) We didn't warm his food unless it was frozen or just out of the fridge. Most of the time it was room temp.
4) We don't have a microwave, but I have the Beaba Babycook. You can defrost in there. You could always heat the frozen cube up in a small skillet.
5) DS ate 3-5 bites and was done. At 10 months he started eating about 2 oz on average, and now he eats 4 oz or more depending on what it is. He really likes cereal, applesauce, and mac & cheese.
6) No. He started waking up more during the night, but I think that was due more to a growth spurt. ?

?
We skipped cereal. He'll have oatmeal once he's better at feeding himself.
Since we are doing baby led weaning/solids we just give him food (soft cooked fruits and veggies so far) and let him do the rest. Right now just once a day. He hasn't actually "eaten" much since he's still working on figure it out. I don't think it has to be warmed as he's eaten cold banana and avocado no problem.
I haven't noticed any sleep changes but like I said not so much food has made it to his tummy yet!

) if you delayed solids until 6 months, do you STILL do oatmeal/rice cereal or do you just skip it? I am confused by this
We started with rice cereal, but it gave her horrible diarrhea. We did oatmeal for the first month. She'd have it each night at dinner.
2) how often does your baby eat solids ?
At 7 months, I added green veggies, which she had for lunch at daycare. Now she is 10 months and has a 4 oz bottle for breakfast, Cheerios as a morning snack, a bottle, a green veggie and one of the following: fruit/rice (whole-grain)/sweet veggie like sweet potatoes or carrots at lunch, puffs as an afternoon snack, and bottle and table food for dinner. Then a bottle before bed.
3) does baby food HAVE to be warmed?
I don't warm the stuff I buy.
4) how do you defrost frozen baby food (and heat if necessary according to #3) how can you do this with no microwave?
I defrost in the fridge and microwave. If you don't have a microwave, you can get a "First Years" bottle warmer which has an attachment that you can heat baby food in.
5) how much does your LO eat at each sitting? I feel like grant ate 2 freaking mouthfuls, if even that!
DD loved solids. I could have started solids at 4 months and she would have been thrilled. She'd been interested in food for quite some time.
6) did introducing solids change your baby's sleep habits at all?
They just helped her to sleep longer (e.g., the oatmeal right before bed).

1) if you delayed solids until 6 months, do you STILL do oatmeal/rice cereal or do you just skip it? I started w/them but didn't continue feeding them after allergies were ruled out. She just didn't like them mixed with anything.
2) how often does your baby eat solids ? At 6 months we were only doing 1 meal a day (breakfast)
3) does baby food HAVE to be warmed? I only warmed it if it was in the fridge. DD never finished a full jar of anything in one sitting. If it was a new jar I just opened it straight out of the cupboard.
4) how do you defrost frozen baby food (and heat if necessary according to #3) how can you do this with no microwave? I'm not sure of this answer....
5) how much does your LO eat at each sitting? I feel like grant ate 2 freaking mouthfuls, if even that! It would take DD 2 meals to finish a stage 1 jar at that age, unless it was a flavor she really super loved (and even then, she didn't really finish a full jar at a meal until closer to 7.5 months)
6) did introducing solids change your baby's sleep habits at all? Not really.
