Worried about DD's head

She used to favor one side when she was newborn, but since taking her to the chiro, she has gotten much better.  But the side she used to favor is a little flat and there is a bulge on that side of her head.  And now the back of her head is looking a little flat to me too.  DH says I'm crazy, but whenever I look at her that is all I see.  I've talked to the pedi about it and she just said she'll look at it at her 4 month appointment in two weeks.  The problem is, I have a hard time keeping her off her head.  I try to give her some tummy time, but she still hates it, so instead I'll put her in the bumbo for awhile, but I want her to have floor time too.  We moved just recently so she has spent a lot of time in her carseat the last couple months running errands and such.  So how do I keep her off her head as much as possible?  She needs floor time so that she can learn those motor skills, but I'm so worried about her head.  She is rolling from her tummy to her back, but not back to belly yet.  Anyone else dealing with this?

  • I am right there with you. I think it seems obvious to us because we are with them all the time. Others probably don't notice at all. We were out of town for a week and a half so Claire was in her carseat a lot. Ugh, the Mommy guilt!

  • DD has the same thing. Infact, we were in therapy for her neck muscles too. She favored one particular side and they believe the flatness and this muscle favor was due to me running out of room when I was pg.

We were told to up her tummy time, place a rolled receiving blanket under her neck and lower head when on her back (not in carseat though!), and constantly stretched and made her turn her head different ways. We've just been really conscientious of getting her off of that spot.Over time the flatness has improved, but it has been slow progress! (Severe flatness can cause facial distortion if left untreated!)

We go back to the pedi in Aug and we'll see what he says. Hopefully the progress will be enough for him. If not, we'll need to see a specialist who will take measurements, wait a month, and then take more measurements and compare. If things don't improve then, we'll talk about banding/helmeting her.

    But I'm optimistic!

  • We use the bumbo and an exersaucer. I also sit on the ground with him to keep him upright. You could also prop her up with the boppy behind her.

LOVE your siggy pics - that hat is just too cute!

  • Yup we just went to DS 4mo appt on Tues and she pointed out the flat spot on right back side of his head. She told us to do more tummy time, do range of motion exercises and switch is position often. DH is a physical therapist and he talked to one his orthotist friends and he wants to see him and "possibly" fit him for a helmet. He recommended we do the exercises for a month to 6wks and we would go from there.
  • I don't have that problem but I bought this:?https://www.myhuggabebe.com. I love it. I am now able to put my daughter in her exersaucer & outdoor swing. Before I was stuffing blankets around her. Hope that helps!
