We have an 05 Mazda 6 & my husband loves it! We fit two convertible car seats in it using the latch with no problem - when he takes the boys places & I need my vehicle. Just won't be able to fit 3 in there ; )
I should add that my husband is tall too.. so the infant seat had to go in the middle or on the passenger side, but no issues with the convertible.. but he has the same problem in my SUV.
We have a 2009 Mazda 3 Hatchback and the Snugride 22 works in the back middle spot. It is a little tight for the driver/ passenger legroom though, but since it is my car it's no big deal. I don't know how a larger infant seat would work, like the Snugride 32 or Keyfit 30. It will be nice when we switch to a convertible since they take up less space w/regard to recline.
We recently went car shopping and the Mazda 3 was one of our top choices. However, when we brought our Chicco Keyfit 30 in to test it in the back, it didn't fit well in the middle or passenger position (unless the passenger seat was moved pretty far up).
We loved that car but because of that, couldn't justify buying it. I'm not sure if our car seat is bigger or not. We did a quick test of the Mazda 6 and I don't think it fit much better.
My suggestion is to take the car seat with you when you are car shopping. It made our decision a lot easier on us.
I have a 2005 Mazda6. We looked at both the 3 and 6. For the price/size, we went with the 6. More spacious and just about the same price. In my opinion, the 3 does not fit 5 (like it says), the 6 however does and comfortably. We have not tried putting a carseat in yet, but I am pretty confident it will fit with no problem.

I know I'm posting late, but I hope you see this! We just traded in our Mazda 3 for a bigger car. The car seat (Snugride) would only fit behind the passenger seat, and the passenger seat would have to be all the way up in order for the seat to fit in. No one would ever be able to sit in the front passenger seat if we had the baby in the car. I loved our car and was very sad to get rid of it. We did not consider a 6, but I would think that would have more space and be a better option.
