Cradle cap with lots of hair?

LO has some cradle cap and tons of hair, which makes it harder to get rid of. I've tried using baby oil, but it's hard to get it through to the scalp and leaves his hair oily even after washing well. What have people done that worked?

  • my LO has tons of hair and had a little cradle cap and I used conditioner.  I then combed his hair well and it never came back.  GL

  • Did you just use regular conditioner or is there one for babies?

  • Let me tell you I have tried EVERY cradle cap cure there is and DS had it from birth till about a few days ago.  I just kept using the baby oil on his head once or twice a week.  It leaves his hair greasy but apparently it works.  Also once you've put the oil on his head use a soft brush to scrub the flakes off.  GL!
  • We had the same problem here.  After the initial oil treatment, it did get a lot better.  Now I tend to root through her hair while she's breastfeeding and pick out the larger chunks.  I don't think she likes it very much, but she's focused on eating so she puts up with me!  It's gradually gotten better and better; now it's almost gone.
  • me pedi told me to use Head And Shoulders about 2 x per week and this worked great. She told me NOT to use baby oil because max's hair was so thick and long that we'd never be able to wash the oil completely out and that this would make cradle cap worse.

  • I had the same problem with the oil. Our pedi has us using Selsun Blue on DS's head. It is helping so much. He still has it. The day we bath him it looks completely better, but by the next bath day it is back. Of course, you have to be really careful not to get it in LO eyes.

  • Be careful with the anti dandruff shampoos though.  J had a horrible reaction to it and his scalp got all red and crusty.
  • Thanks, everyone. I'll try conditioner and then ask LO's ped for a shampoo recommendation.

  • DS has it also. I use baby oil. Put it on real well and leave on all day. Give him a bath that night and take a brush to his head while in the bath. it usually gets all of it
