3rd Trimester

Punched in the stomach by friend's dog

God I hate that dog. I love dogs. I have two huge ones I couldn't live without and consider the closest of family. But this dog is 90 lbs. and a huge pouncer. As soon as he saw me, he went right for my stomach. I had a bit of a meltdown. I am not going to be around that dog for the rest of my pregnancy. I was being careful too. I think the baby is probably fine, but I'll call my peri anyway. God I hate that dog.

Re: Punched in the stomach by friend's dog

  • I don't mind big dogs as long as they don't jump on me. They scare me when they do because I am 5'4 and can be knocked over very easily. I am especially nervous around them with my baby belly!

  • i'm dog sitting for a very rambuncious boxer who is 100 lbs. he is a big pouncer, but usually i know it's coming so i can throw a hip into him. that usually gets the message across that jumping is bad. Sorry you had a meltdown...does the dogs owner try to control that behaviour?

They don't control his behavior effectively anyway. I think one of them said, "down." It didn't work...

I was embarrassed about my reaction so came inside and cried and DH followed me. I felt like everyone else there thought I was overreacting. Hello! There's a baby in there! He's already faced some challenges and doesn't need to be punched!

  • I don't have any pets, but always had dogs growing up and my sister is a Veterinarian.  I hate when people don't train and/or control their dogs.  It's awful going to someones house and having the dog lunge at anyone that comes to the door.  Sorry he pounced on you.  I'm sure your friend was horrified and feels really bad.

I feel you. My dog is 85 lbs and gets so excited he just wants to play when people come over. We left him with my parents a couple weekends ago and when we went to pick him up he punched me right in the belly, even though I was being careful. Baby is fine... hope you feel better soon.

By the way, our dog is trained and knows the command "off". However, in circumstances when he's excited to see someone, he may get a couple jumps in.

  • I got socked in the stomach a few months back by our neighbors huge black lab/golden retriever mix.  They have no discipline when it comes to jumping.  They just say "Jessie, down..." and leave it at that.

I wont go back in their yard now. (BTW, Baby was fine, but I don't like being jumped on.)

  • We have two large dogs and personally I can't stand when people can't control their dogs.  Our dogs are not jumpers, but if they get too excited DH is quick to put them in line.  One of my dogs did get excited when I stopped petting him one day and raked his paw across my stomach.  It hurt like hell, the skin there doesn't exactly havea lot of give to it!  But that has never happened before or since.  Anyhow that hurt bad enough I can't imagine having the whole dogs weight on your belly, NOT COOL.

Hope LO is doing ok in there!

We are very laid back dog owners who generally spoil our dogs silly, but there are a couple of things that are intolerable and we crack down on. Jumping up on people is one of these. Both of our huge dogs did this when they were younger, but hells no now.

  • How scary!  I would have reacted the same way!  Last night I woke up with my 20 lb. cat standing on my stomach - he basically jumped from the floor right onto my belly and missed all other parts of the bed.  I have an appt today and will definitely make sure everything is fine.  Your reaction was totally appropriate and normal.
