Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Onesie Question

I'm preparing to wash for LO and didn't know if I should include the 0-3 month sizes with the newborn size onesies.  The package says the newborn size fits 5-8lbs and the 0-3 months fit 8-12lbs.  I know that newborns grow pretty fast and I'm expecting at least a 7 pounder.  I also heard that newborns typically lose some of their birth weight.

Are you new moms finding that you are using the newborn sizes for quite some time or did your LO jump right into the 0-3 months?

Re: Onesie Question

  • My LO was 6 lbs. 3 oz. at birth and is wearing NB onesies. I would say have at least one pack of newborn onesies and if you need more you can always go buy them.

  • I'd definitely throw them in together. Yes, your baby will lose weight in the hospital. FWIW, my 1 month old is still in newborn, but 0-3 are starting to fit perfectly. 0-3 were huge for the first 3 weeks.
  • DS was 7lbs even and was SWIMMING in newborn clothes. We had some hand-me-down preemie stuff that fit him better because he was so dang skinny when we brought him home. We packed up his NB stuff when he was about... 7-8 weeks old.  But I would wash some 0-3 anyway since there is no way to tell how big LO will be.

  • My DD wore NB until she was 7 weeks old.  Lots of babies are in 0-3 from day one, though.
It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and wash the 0-3 stuff, because you know LO will be in them sooner or later.

  • I'd include them, especially because sizes vary so much. Even with the weight ranges on the clothes, it may or may not fit your LO right. DD was born just two ounces below 8 pounds, and she was swimming in NB clothes for a couple of weeks. It also depends on brand. Gerber onesies run really small.
  • We actually used the NB onesies for at least 6 weeks. DD was born 8lbs 14oz, 20.5 in long. But some 0-3's fit her then too, depending on the brand. DD's still in 0-3's, just starting to go into 3-6's. I'd have a good variety of both NB and 0-3 just in case.

  • Make sure to wash both!  You never know how big your baby will be, and from my experience so far different brands of clothes definitely fit differently.  DD is 6 lb. 15 oz. and her NB onesies are pretty big on her.
  • DS was 7lbs. 4 oz at birth and wore NB for 6 weeks.  We actually didn't use any of the NB onesies because I didn't put anything over DS's head because it was so freaking floppy and it scared me, lol.  We just did side snap tees and sleepers instead.  But if you aren't a scaredy cat like me, then I would do both.

  • Wash them all!!

DS didn't fit in newborn AT ALL.  We had some really cute outfits that he could never wear!  He went straight into the 0-3 month.

  • I would definitely wash them both.  DD was 8 lbs at birth and 0-3 was big at first.  But...if they are gerber, I wouldn't even open the NB package of onesies.  They run so small and shrink when washed so the NB size wouldn't last long anyway.  My 6 week old is wearing the 3-6 gerber onesies that I was saving for later.
