Question from 3rd-tri about rectal temps

We didn't bother registering for an ear thermometer because I've read they can't be used before LO is one year old, and that they are usually pretty inaccurate.  I've also read that taking the temperature rectally is the most accurate way.  Now, my mom always just did it by sticking the thermometer under our arms, and I can't even clip my own dog's nails because I worry I'll go too far, so I don't know how I could stick a thermometer in my kid's anus without feeling like I was harming him.  Do you take your LO's temperature rectally?

  • BRU has some thermometers that have a little guard thing so you can't go in too far.  I don't remember the brand name, but they work just fine.  And it isn't as scary as you think it might be.  DS doesn't even know when I taking his temp.

  • Yes we have done. They have a 'line' on the thermometer so you don't go too far.

Plus they are good for clearing constipation. Just sayin'.

  • I have a rectal thermometer for DD.  It doesn't hurt her, she has no idea what is going on. You'll get over taking your LO's temp rectally really quickly.  I was really nervous the first time I did it but now its no big deal because for me it is comforting to know that she does not have a fever when suspect that she might be getting sick.
  • We have a temporal lobe thermometer that is our "first use" one - if it reads even close to a fever (99 or higher) I take his temp rectally.  I like using the temporal lobe one first though, to spare him any unneeded but activity ;-) (although, it's really not that hard and he really doesn't notice anyway).

  • At Target the have the rectal thermometer that is m ade so you can't stick it in to far.  I can't remember the brand, but it comes in the bag of first aid things in the baby section.  First Years?  Red Cross?  Something like that.

Rectal temps aren't that bad like everyone has said.  It is the most accurate and usually pretty quick.

Yes, it is not a big deal at all. ?I'm a pediatric RN and I have never met an infant who was bothered by it. ?It is the most accurate and that is very important for the little babies. ?I bet if you do it once you will be over your concern.

I was nervous about it at first too but, honestly, he gets more upset with me holding him arm down then he does with me taking his temp rectally.  I don't even think he feels it..he's too interested in his feet. :)  And ditto the pp about the line on the thermometer and not having to go in too far.  Don't worry, once you have to do it you'll realize it's not as hard as you thought!
