xp: time off proposals

Hi ladies -- do any of you mind sharing some info on your maternity leave proposals? I have no idea when I should turn it in (before leave or once I'm on leave).  I get 7 weeks pd leave and plan to take an additional week of vacation. I would like to propose 2 additional weeks off unpaid, but don't know where to start. I'd also like to transition back to work part-time 3-4 days a week. TIA!

Re: xp: time off proposals

  • Definitely discuss before you go out on leave.  I told my boss I was pregnant at 12 weeks.  At that time, I asked him if we could discuss my leave and return to work further in my pregnancy.  When I was around 28 weeks, I sat down with him to review my proposal (after reviewing my HR rep as well).  I took 18 weeks off, so I needed to request the extra 6 weeks weeks off.  At this time, I also discussed my proposed return to work schedule - 4 days a week and my hours.  Good luck!

  • do you qualify for FMLA (based on size of employer)?  If you do, you should be able to take 12 weeks altogether.

I think the transitioning back is what the proposal should focus on.  I dropped to 32 hours a week permanently and that was not a problem for my employer, esp. in the current economy and me dropping to part time also meant they would no longer have to pay my whole insurance premium, and I ended up dropping the coverage anyway and joining DH's plan since we needed a family plan at that point.

  • no I don't qualify for FMLA because I started a new job with a new company in March so when the time rolls around to go on leave, I will have only been with the company for 8 months. I know I'll definitely get my 8 weeks, I'm just concerned about asking for the extra 2 unpaid due to my short time with the company.   I plan to wait until the beginning of the 3rd tri to talk to HR and my boss.
