dental work before IUI?

I have a massive toothache that came on last night. I can go in to see my dentist tomorrow (late afternoon), if I want to. I'm guessing I need a filling or have a cracked a tooth or something.

I am likely going to be triggering tomorrow night for a Friday IUI. It's okay to have the dental work done earlier in the day, right? Does that include just the regular stuff, or can I have nitrous, too? (I usually do take the nitrous, as I can get really freaked out at the dentist.) My dentist won't work on women while they're pregnant, but pre-pregnancy it should be fine, yes?

My RE's office is closed now, but I may check with them in the morning if anyone thinks it might be a problem.

Re: dental work before IUI?

  • i'd be careful. if they won't work on pregnant women, there might be issues with the toxins staying in your system, since you might be pregnant in four days. i would definitely avoid the nitrous and any other unnecessary chemicals, and talk to both the RE and the dentist to be on the safe side.

  • I had the exact same concerns last year!  While I am not sure I would take the chance... my RE said because it takes up to 6 days for implantation and there is no transfer of blood for a few weeks you should be fine.  Many, many, many women have work done before they realize they are pregnant.

I agree to check with your dentist . Good luck!!

  • Thanks for the responses. I took your advice and called the RE, and his nurse called back and said that anything is fine pre-IUI (meds, nitrous, root canal if necessary-- knock on wood!!), but after the IUI no nitrous (local anesthesia is ok, though). Just thought I'd post that info from the nurse in case anyone comes across this thread in a search.
