1st Trimester

Empty sac??

Hello everyone.  I just got back from my 1st  dr. appointment and had an ultrasound.  I measured 5 weeks and 6 days, but I had an empty gestational sac.  She told me to come back in a couple of weeks for another ultrasound.  How worried should I be that the sac was empty??

I have googled without alot of positive results.

Re: Empty sac??

  • I'm sorry I can't help you, but I just wanted to say that I hope everything works out and I will send good vibes your way.

  • If you're pretty sure about your O date, I'm afraid I wouldn't be too hopeful. I'd call and ask for another u/s next week. Why stress any longer if you don't have to. By next week, they should definitely be able to see something even if you're a bit off on your days.

    Good Luck!

  • Well, my first thought is that if your doctor told you to come back in two weeks then she is not *too* concerned about it, or at least thinks there's a reasonable chance that all is fine.

Second, I remember from my first pregnancy that this is not unusual with extremely early ultrasounds - it might just be too early to see anything but the sac.

If I were you I'd try to take care of my body the very best I can over the next two weeks and see what happens then.  It's too early to panic.  :)  (Though I understand your apprehension!!!)

  • Diddo taking care of yourself and go back when DR says.  It is early and hopefully next time, you will see a baby!

  • When I got my first u/s at 5 weeks there was just a sac with nothing in it and they told me to come back in a week which i did and then they found a little tiny baby growing. It might of been just too early to tell.

  • I am in the same boat as you. I also had a ultrasound done today with an empty sac. My next u/s is July 14.  We can just hope for are little peanuts to grow.

     Good Luck!

  • Same thing happened to me. I saw a healthy heartbeat when I went back two weeks later. Good luck!

  • This happened to me in two previous pregnancies...both resulted in miscarriage. But I also had cramping and bleeding. If you aren't experiencing any of that, maybe your dates are just off ie, you O'd later than you thought. I wouldn't be totally assured that everything is fine because there is a good chance that something is wrong. Sorry, but that's just honest. But, there's also a chance that this is a fluke and you will see something in a few weeks.
  • Nice!

    Keep Me posted.

  • I think its pretty typical to not see much at that time, keep in mind implantation time varies, so you may be a day or two off in your dates, which at this point, makes a huge difference. Try to stay positive, and maybe see if you can get in early next week for a follow up, at least to put your mind at ease.
  • Happened to me two times. One ended bad, and one ended good.  This pregnancy, went in at 6 weeks but only measured 4 weeks.  Went back 10 days later and was measuring right on at 7weeks with a strong heartbeating away.  There is tremendous variation in early ultrasounds so don't lose hope just yet.  Pray pray pray for a good outcome and read https://www.misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com/mycommunity/viewtopic.php?t=11318 for hope while you wait.

  • A friend of mine had the same thing happen at about the same point.  The couldn't find anything in the sac and her HCG levels went up but didn't double like they should.  They had her go back a little over a week later for another ultrasound and they were more than prepared to not find anything, when to their amazment there was the baby.  So there is always hope.  GOOD LUCK!!!!

  • I'll jump in here too and say to keep hope!  The pp's are right in that even a day can make a lifetime of difference in what they can see (literally.)  If you O'd when you thought you did, you might have implanted late, or the dates could be slightly off in general.

Being in a similar boat (I go back on Monday to see if I've got heartbeats).. I can say with force.. do not Google.  Google is not your friend.  Google will convince you that the worst outcome is the most likely, which is NOT TRUE.

Good luck to you, and keep us posted.

  • I had an u/s at 5w3d, and the sac was empty.  I went for another u/s yesterday and we had a nice strong hb- 133bpm, and the bean is measuring 6w1d.  I thought something was wrong but it just turns out I had a bit of a late implanter.

Best of luck to you, I hope everything works out great.

  • Reading all of these posts has certainly put my mind at ease a bit.  Not totally of course.  I went in last week and they only saw an empty sac.  It really has worried me as I thought that I was farther along than 4 weeks.  But I'm going back in 4 weeks, so I should be 8 by then, for another ultrasound and hopefully all is well then.   I'm going away on vacation for three weeks that is why they are doing it in 4 weeks.  Long time to wait but my mind will be occupied and I'm sure that the time will fly by.  hopefully.

Hoping that you all have sticky babies!!

It's honestly early to find anything other than a sac.

  • I had my first ultrasound with my 3rd a few days before 6 weeks.  All we seen was a tiny sac.  He had me come back in one week and at that time we could see a speck.  Two weeks later seen the flicker of the heartbeat.
  • Ditto to everyone else about staying hopeful- it's still early, and if your dr. was concerned, you'd be going in earlier for another u/s. Best wishes!
