Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9 month old drinks very little formula....

I make him 4, 6oz bottles a day (24oz) but he NEVER finishes one.  Many times he'll only take 3 oz, sometimes four. I estimate that he is getting 16-18 ounces a day.  He's not a huge eater either....but just seems really distracted during feedings and doesn't want to drink.  Everything I am reading says that the minimum he should be drinking is 24 oz.

Do you think it's ok that he's not much of a drinker or eater?  It's funny because I've been starting to think he's much smaller than my first son....but they were the same at the 6 month check up. I have his 9 month appointment next week and of course will be asking these questions also. He seems totally fine, happy, sleeps well, crawling, starting to pull up, etc.

Thanks!

  • I don't know how much help I can be but everyone always says if they are wetting diapers, etc. I BF and wonder the same thing. I just wanted to thank you for posting about it. It seems like so many people have the opposite problem. I think that the babies are fine, if they have the energy to do their normal things, etc.

  • my dd was never a big eater but around 8 and 9 months she refuses formula. she would drink about 14-18oz a day...the doc said it's ok.

  • DS did the same thing...our pedi said that he was getting a lot of water from his jarred food at the point, which he was.  I started offering juice around that time I think...maybe a little later on down the road but DS is not much of a formula guy (he was BF for 9 months).
  • I was woried before also. DD would only drink about 9 to 12oz of milk during the day in day carebut she is a big eater. I would read that she should be having 24 oz also but doc said that as long as she's drinking at times. Her weight and everything else is good

  • We have had the same concern with our DS.  I just got an email back from his dr and she said just to let him dictate the amount.  She recommends 20-24 oz total/day at this point but if it's alittle less not too worry.

Her recommendation was to start putting bm in a sippy and offering before all solid meals.  We going to try that but the sippy cup has been a challenge as well.
