GD ? - Numbers are making no kind of sense!!

So I've been on the GD diet for a few weeks now.  All of my numbers except fasting were diet-controlled.  In the last week, I've been seeing higher than normal numbers after meals but eatiing the same things - weird #1.

So... one day last week we went out to eat and while I "tried" to keep my meal in mind, but I had a feeling my numbers would be high.  I was wrong!!  My number was low - below 120.  Weird.  The next day my DH was trying to be nice and brought me my favorite cookies (DUH DH).  I had one after dinner but again, my number was lower than normal.

So DH suggested I do an experiment and not be SO controlled with my diet (not go crazy, but not super stringent about the number of carbs etc) for a day to see what happened.  ALL of my numbers were LOWER than they normally are.  This is with a cookie here and there, dairy for breakfast which I'm not "supposed" to have, a healthy amount of watermelon etc.

What is up with this?  I"m goign to talk to my OB about it tomorrow at my appt, but I'm beyond frustrated.  Why are my numbers BETTER when I'm not following the plan to a T?

Any ideas???

  • I have also had this problem... and I've been cheating for the past, oh, two weeks or so. NOT like, going crazy on carbs or sugar by any means, but having more carbs than normal for meals, eating fruit, etc... and my numbers are still way below the limits!

I am getting my growth u/s tomorrow actually, and as long as Max is still growing on schedule, I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing.

  • I had the same issue. I've found when I eat a meal that has more fat in it, I can eat more carbs. Example- I had 2 mozzerella sticks, a baked chicken breast with a sauce on it, and 1/2 a baked potato with butter. My numbers were the lowest EVER before I started glyburide. I eat a super strict meal and my numbers go through the roof- before glyburide I would have numbers over 200 with eating strict carb controlled meals. It's so weird.

The nurse educator at my OB's office is a bit of a witch about things, but my dietitian said if my numbers are good that's all that matters. My body knows better than any nurse or doctor, so the numbers are what count!

  • Ditto to the previous posters. I've started eating apples again, and not being so strict, which have improved my numbers, LOL.

I was on 2.5mg glyburide for 2 weeks, for fasting #, but I kept crashing in the afternoons. So, we cut it in half - and my first # this morning was a 30 - I retested and it was 60.

I think my OB will take me off of it completely next Tuesday - I keep crashing in the afternoons, despite eating apples like my OB suggested. LOL.?

This is very interesting. I just started testing last Thursday and I'm beginning to see the same trends.  Please post what your nurse educators/dietitians are telling you.

  • OK - so I spoke to my GD nurse today (my appt moved to Thurs so I ddn't see the OB today).  She had the dietician call me.  Basically, in a nutshell, they don't know either.  Everyone's body reacts differently and while they ahve a meal plan that works for MOST people, it doesn't work for everyone.  She said that perhaps I was more active the days I've had "extras", but nope... not the case.  She also said that as you go along in pregnancy, your hormone levels change which can also cause fluctuation in your sugar.

So the bottom line is (and she said this as well), if what I'm doing is keeping my numbers in check, THIS is what is important.  So I'm happy to say I will be eating a tasty snack this evening, as long as my levels are good, I'm going to go with it.  I'm loving the little extra flexibility and going to enjoy it in case in a week my numbers start going crazy and I have to be extra strict! :)
