Bottle Warmers, did you use one?

I am planning on BFing and also pumping so DH can help sometimes. Did you use a bottle warmer? I can't decide if they are worth it or not. TIA :)

Re: Bottle Warmers, did you use one?

  • We are keeping the twins in our room at night until they sleep longer stretches and I am using a bottle warmer. I am pumping so DH can help and also because we supplement with Neosure to make the milk 24 calories.  I have a cooler by the bed with the bottles for the night and I use the bottle warmer to warm them before the feeding. Its nice not having to really get up to feed the girls and it helps me get back to sleep as quick as possible. If they weren't in our room I wouldn't use one.

  • So you wouldn't want one for during the day?

Have you seen the one that is a cooler in the back for storing bottles and a warmer in the front? Those are neat, I thought of one of those for the bedroom (or do something like you do) but then I wondered if I would just end up tandem feeding at nighttime.

  • We haven't used one so far, but my cousins (who have 5 boys) swear by them, so I'm going to borrow theirs and see if it works out better than our current method of microwaving water, then sticking the bottle in the hot water to warm it -- the process takes about 10 minutes and is a PITA when you have a shreiking baby in your arms . . .

So, maybe buy one off craigslist.  That way, if you like it, great, if you don't, you're not losing much money on it :)

We use a bucket of hot tap water.  While we're changing diapers the bottles are in the water and they are heating well enough by the time the babies are ready to eat.

We do use a travel one when we're in the car and it's so slow.  I hate it.

I don't use one during the day. I just let the bottles sit in hot water during the day. And the bottle warmer you are referring to is the one I use. I have an additional cooler to hold extra bottles because they eat more than once through the night. Tandem feeding would be nice but we don't quite have the hang of it yet and bottles are faster.

  • We never used one.  I just heat bottles in a cup of hot water.  We use Platex Drop-ins and you aren't supposed to put them in bottle warmers.

  • I would get one.  They aren't that expensive...ours was $15 and they are just easy.  DH and I read in a couple of baby books that bottle warmers are completely unnecessary so we didn't get one.  We would heat up bottles in hot water.  Then MIL came to visit and bought one.  OMG it was so much easier.  You just put the water in and press a button.  So nice to have when you're holding one baby and the other is screaming for a bottle.  Do you need them?  No.  Are they nice to have? Yes!
  • We use the one described above - First Years Day and Night Warmer. It does work with Drop Ins and states works with disposable bottles. We've used it with the Drops Ins since we brought DD home.

  • They were my lifesavers!  We had two for the night feedings... the babies would get up and be hungry and wanted to be fed  NOW... the bottle warmers worked in less than a minute... they were soooo worth it to me... I used it for both breast milk and formula.
  • We just sit the bottles in some nuked water and it works just fine.
  • I have the Avent one and really like it.  The problem with putting the bottle in hot water, is the water cools, and if the bottle is frozen, you'll have to reheat the water.  With the warmer, it keeps the water hot.
  • We have 2 mini crockpots filled with water ($10 each at Walmart) 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs.  At night we pack a cooler bag and turn the crockpot on - I put the bottles in, change their diapers, and then they are ready to go.  The bottles take about 3 minutes to heat.

In the morning, we shut off the upstairs crockpot and turn on the downstairs one.

  • We are not planning on using them. I think we are going to try the crockpot method.
  • We got one as a shower gift and never used it.  We actually have a Keurig coffe/tea maker that keeps water hot all the time, so we ended up using that beacuse it was just as quick.  If we didn't have the Keurig we would have definitely used the bottle warmer though!
