Toddlers: 24 Months+

Opinions please!

Paige is REFUSING to eat!  Even the foods that I know she LOVES she throws on the floor!  What can I do?!  I weighed her  - at 18 mo she was 30lbs even and now she is only right at 31.  I know for most that is normal and they do stop growing so fast but I feel she is not getting any nutrients.  She doesn't like milk so she drinks water and now she is not eating?!  WHAT DO I DO?!

  • how long has she not been eating?  2 weeks or 2 days, kwim?

  • She has been eating poorly for a least 2 weeks.  Yesterday and today she is REFUSING to eat at all!  She will take a bite or two and then be done.  She LOVES eggs and toast and Mom said she ate three bites of eggs and maybe 1/2 a piece of toast.  She ate NO lunch!

  • What about a smoothie or V8 splash?
  • honestly she is not going to starve herself. She is at that age where she realized that what she eats is under her control...TJ didn't eat good for like 3 weeks and then he was fine. But she is old enough to know when she hungry and when she wants to eat.
  • Madi is not eating right now either!  Probably just a phase.
  • didn't you say she had a slight cold/cold symptoms.  whenever Carson is really backed up in the head with crap his appetite drops.  i think it is b/c he can't taste much and well he just feels icky.  i would say either 2 yrs molars or have her checked for an ear infection, have her throat checked (maybe red or sore and you would not know it)  he also gets that post-nasal drip when he has a cold that makes his throat red.  but if her appetite has dropped over 2 weeks i would have her checked out to be sure it is not something other than a picky 2 year old.
  • My little one goes through phases were she doesn't eat much at all. I think it has to do with teething. Do you think she is getting some new teeth? Maybe you can try giving her some tylenol before her next meal and see if it makes a difference.

Good idea!  Her 2 yr molars are VERY swollen and she is fighting a cold.

Stacie - I passed the V8 and the fruit version the other day and thought about this for her!  THanks for bringing to my attention again!

Ditto this.  Pedi asked about her eating at her 18 mo appt.  I told her it was hit or miss depending on the day.  One day she eats me out of house and home and then she refuses to eat anything.  Pedi told me it was perfectly normal.  She is at an age where she will eat when she is hungry and not eat when she's not hungry.

  • Totally normal.  She won't starve.  We just had this convo with Pedi the other day.  Around that age they realized that what goes in their mouth is about the only thing they control, and it is a way to seek independence.
  • I agree with PPers, its normal but can make you worry.  I would just keep trying.  GL
  • Your job is to offer the food and her job is to eat.  I'm betting its her molars and/or a cold plus the nature of a toddler to drive us crazy.

Keep an eye on her intake, but DON'T try to force her to eat or let her know that its driving you crazy.  If her behavior is having an affect on you she's more likely to keep it up.

And also, it's totally normal for weight gain to slow down.  As long as she's staying on or near her growth curve it isn't a problem.  My DD went from 20 pounds at 15 months to 21 pounds at 18 months and everything is fine.

  • LOL, what everyone else said.  She will eat when she is hungry.  Offer food to her and try not to make a big deal if she refuses it.  Don't give her a reaction at all!

  • I have been dealing with this for two months now. DS will NOT eat unless it is HIS idea:( so irritating! but at least  for the moment he is eating at least 1 whole meal a day the rest is 1 bit out of everything and then he is done.

  • Hmm I don't know. Just keep offering it to her I guess.

I wouldn't worry about the weight. Braelyn was 24lbs and I think 10oz (or right around there) at 18 months. I just weighed her the other day and she was exactly 25lbs. But she also eats so that helps not worry.?

  • i skipped to the bottom, sorry.

i don't see it as a big deal at all.  she's a big kid and gaining 1lb since her 18 month appt is good. she'll eat when she wants to.

  • I know how tough it can be.  Esp when you are used to a good eater.  But, I agree with all the othert posters.  Make healthy choices available.  That is all you can do.

3 bites of eggs and half a piece of toast would be a good breakfast in my home! ;)  My gal likes her milk though so that always helps ease my worry.
