Sterilize bottles - when to do this?

How early is everyone sterilizing bottles?  I am planning on BF, but just in case that doesn't work out, I have purchased a few bottles and want to have them ready.  Any suggestions?  TIA!

  • I sterilized mine around 37 weeks.  I plan on BF too, but did it just in case.

  • I did mine when I hit full term-I'd say go ahead and do yours if you have time.
  • i plan on BFing too ... i got them for when i have to pump. i think i will try to do mine this week, but if not, then next week. i cleared out a spot in our cabinets for them this past weekend.

prob won't do it until 38/39 weeks. i also plan on bfing, so i don't think i'll need them for a bit and it only takes an hour to do if i need them in a pinch.
  • I read in the latest BabyTalk mag that sterilizing bottles is really no longer necessary due to the improvement in water quality throughout the country.   Way back when, moms had to sterilize everything because the water used to wash bottles and such was not the best quality.   Nowadays, according to the mag, this is unnecessary, just wash well with warm soapy water (before each use).

I would ask your pediatrician for a professional opinion if you're still unsure.

  • We just ran them through the dishwasher, we never have officially sterilized anything as you don't really have to anymore from what I understand. I have boiled older stuff once or twice because it was getting old, for paci we just throw them out after a while.

?I did BF for a year so it wasn't like we used them a lot anyway,.?

  • Ohh, good question! DH just cleared out a cabinet in the kitchen for baby stuff, and I put the bottles away yesterday but couldn't decide when I should sterilize them.?

I was thinking I'd do it next weekend. We're using drop-ins, though- so there's not much to sterilize other than the nipples.
  • Oh jeez.  Another thing I hadn't thought of.  I don't plan to need them right away (I just got them for expressed breast milk), so I'll probably just do it whenever I get around to it.  Maybe in the week or so that I'm off before my due date.

What I really need to do is clear out some cabinet space for baby stuff.  We've already received some sippy cups, kiddie bowls, etc.  I need to find room for that stuff, as well as the bottles, somewhere in my kitchen.

Perhaps I am against the norm here, but I did not sterilize mine with DD and I am not sterilizing these.  Most  dishwashers are perfectly fine to wash them.

  • My daughter was formula fed and this baby will be also, so we had a lot of bottles.  Starting at around 36 weeks, I just ran the bottles and all of the pieces through the dishwasher when there was extra room.  After the first time, I only put the nipples and rings through the dishwasher and washed the bottles by hand.  We use Avent Tempo.

  • I washed the bottles pieces in hot, soapy water last week and am running them through the dishwasher as well.  I did boil the nipples and pacifiers as per the directions on the packages, but will use the dishwasher/handwash in the future.
