Baby Names

Do people still have 2 MN's ?

I have a few "older" family members that actually do have 2 mn's, but asking the newer generation, I find that there are far and few.  What do you all think?  It is still appropriate?

Re: Do people still have 2 MN's ?

  • an acquaintance of mine did it with her two boys.  But, I dont think that it is really common, nor do I think it is completely necessary. I think it would be appropriate if it were a family tradition or to honor a family member.

  • I think we were tempted to have 2 MNs because we couldn't decide between them but in the end we decided we'd save one for our possible next baby if it were to be a girl :) Too many names for us..........our kid already has a hyphenated last name !
  • My babies will all have 2 mns.  DH and I and all our siblings do too in fact.  I don't see anything wrong with it, esp since it's a family tradition for both of us.  I rarely ever use my middle names, they are on my important documents and that's it.  My kids names will be a little nicer and flowier than mine though :)
  • A lot of people in my family have two middle names.  I see nothing wrong with it.
  • I think 2 middle names is fine.  I'm actually trying to convince my DH of this.  He thinks it's excessive & unnecessary.  I think if you like it, go with it.

My SIL and her sister both gave their daughters two middle names.
  • I have two middles names., Johannah Reilly..it makes for a loooong name, but it works and its my great grandmothers first/last name.

I think if there is good flow to the name why not.

  • If we have a girl she will have two middle names that we will hyphenate.  DH and I each have Grandma's that we love dearly and we couldn't use one and not the other.
  • DD has two mn's but they are hyphenated.  The reason being is that her mn's are my aunt's first and m/n.  I was named after my aunt (first name only) and wanted to honor my deceased aunt, but wanted the association with her and not me.   That's why I chose to use 2 and hyphenate them.
  • I had never heard of anyone doing this until I started seeing it recently on this board. So in my opinion, it's strange. But only because I've never known anyone with 2 mns. It seems like it's common enough though so maybe I wouldn't worry about it?
  • Why not? I have two middle names and it's never been a problem for me. And as far as someone was saying that it's unnecessary - well, having a middle name at all isn't really necessary...
  • I do and it's annoying. I have Rose, followed by my mom's maiden name as a second middle name. Then, when I added my married last name (not wanting to lose my maiden name), I couldn't delete my second middle name without going to court. Now I have five names! My name is two lines long on my license. People always squint at it and ask which one is my last name. I really would have preferred to only have one mn.

  • I don't see the point of having 2 MNs. I don't know anyone IRL with 2 MNs.

I think you were misinformed about having to go to court to change your name when you got married -- unless it's a specific rule in your state.  I live in VA & had no problem dropping my middle name when I got married & changed my name with SS & my drivers license.  I just did it all at once.

I went from First Middle Maiden to First Maiden Married.

To the OP, we gave our son 2 mn's.  His passport & SS card have all 4 names, but when space is an issue we drop the 2nd mn.

DD only has one middle name.

  • I have two middle names. When I was younger it annoyed me. I don't know anyone else with two middle names, so I guess it makes me unique in some way. Ha! I don't see a problem with it. I normally don't use all of my names anyway.
  • My 19 year old cousin has two MNs.  Then there was the girl I went to high school with who had something insane like 12 MNs.  That might be overkill.

My son has two middle names.  They are both names of people that are now deceased, but were very close to us (family friend and grandparent).  His middle names flow together very well, though
