When we first were married it was definitely a "starter set". We upgraded 3 months after we were married and now again just recently. It's a work in progress [Poll]
I honestly don't know. I've never really got all into the ring thing....meaning I don't know all the lingo and I never looked at rings before we got engaged. I'd say mine is average.
Oh - seeing this post reminded me that my ring was in my pocket! Thanks!
btw - my ring is 1 ct total (engagement ring and wedding band). It has one bigger center diamond and then 29 small ones on the bands. Still makes me smile when I look at it!
I have no freaking idea how many carats mine is, I am not into fancy jewlery and fancy things, I am a simple kind of gal. My engagement ring is a heart shaped diamond with two heart shaped diamonds on the side. I about died when I found out how much DH paid for it (a few months after we got engaged I found the bill while straightening up around the house) Anyway I love it but would never have wanted him to spend that much. My wedding band is very simple, it's just a plain white gold band with milgrain edging, but I picked it out and it's exactly what I wanted. I don't think I would ever really want to upgrade either because the originals are special and if I had money I would rather spend it on something else.
Post pics!!!! I just got a new one as well after DS was born sort of a "Push/Valentines" present. I LOVE IT. Mine is just over a CT with my wedding band.
I don't like diamonds. I think the whole e-ring thing is antiquated, silly and boring. We got matching wedding bands instead. They're from Ireland and have Irish symbols on them.

My diamond is .84 and then there are 4 baguettes. The diamond came from Lebanon when DH's grandparents were traveling thru with the military in the 70's--they bought DH and his 3 brothers diamonds for their future wives--I got the smallest, but the flawless. Then the baguettes are from one of MIL's rings. DH designed it himself.
It's a gift my husband gave me to show me how much he loved me when he asked me to marry him. I didn't ask for a receipt and independent gemological estimates.
Mine is a combined total of 3 I will never upgrade it or change it. I couldn;t imagine doing that. It is so sentimental to me.
Right after I got my ring it had to go back into the shop for over a month as the white gold was coming off on the bottom. The maker had to re cast a new set and it took forever. When we finally picked it up we had a new diamond set in. My new ring is the exact same style, it just weighs more.

I always thought this was my "starter set," but as the years have gone by I realized that I just don't care enough to upgrade it. Chances are I will stop wearing my e-ring all together because I don't really like it and just wear my band -- which I LOVE.

I had the same problem with my first setting, the white gold would turn yellow in less than a year, and I could see where they mounted the diamond. Also when I had it rhodium plated it would come out spotted EVERY time. DH got the ring at The Shane CO and we had it reset 2 X'z at Helzburg with no more problems.

That is why he got me platinum. They told him the white gold would rub off and it would have to be dipped again.
Yes but once Platinum stops looking shiny and new you can get it cleaned and that's it. I can get mine Re dipped and it looks BRAND new. plus with the extended care plan we got, it's free.
Steph - You better have one heII of a rock for me.
Honeybeez - It most certainly is the answer to the question. The poll clearly asks "other - please explain" at the bottom. I was explaining. I could not honestly tell you what my ct weight is. Frankly, I could estimate, since I used to sell diamonds at Zales, but that's fairly pathetic. I never hated anything more about that job than watching some guy agonize over that ring, and you have NO idea how much most guys sweat that purchase, only to have some biitchy bride come back in to exchange it. No, worse was the ones who came in to buy the wedding rings later, only to take that opportunity to tell him how she expected a bigger stone for her anniversary.
It's a symbol of love and devotion. Not a disco ball.

SAME HERE!!! Do we have the same ring???!!!!! lol
I always tell people to buy their Diamonds from Shane CO but not the gold or settings. They filed Chapter 11 though LOL.

Platinum is more brittle than gold. A gold prong caught on something will bend, but probably not pull entirely away. A platinum prong doesn't take a lot to snap off, and if you've got a 4-prong setting, there's a better than average chance that you could lose a diamond.
You can't see the platinum on my ring at all. It is all on the bottom the top is all diamonds in a memoire setting so it is almost an invisible setting. To each their own.
for those of you that don't know your ring size/details did you not get them insured? b/c please please please do so if you haven't. i don't think it's materialistic at all to know the stats. i think it is responsible. your ring should be GIA certified, appraised, and properly insured. rings are expensive and should be protected.

Itty - A gift is a gift. If he wants to "upgrade" it, that's another gift. Personally, I don't see the point. That's kind of what anniversary rings are for.
My husband knows that he's not allowed to do that to my ring. I love it, and it was blessed by the monsignor that married us. To my way of thinking, there's no way to upgrade that.

mine is GIA certified and appraised, but not yet insured DH is lazy.
the only reason i know the stats is because DH was so damn proud of himself, he had to show me all the paperwork.

My ring is covered by our homeowners without that. We asked.
I would have been totally happy with a plain band, but we are lucky and have a friend in the business, so I got a really nice ring for really cheap. However, there have been a couple times when I scratched Collin with my ring and now I wish I had a simple band. I got my e ring and wedding band soldered together. I think simple bands are very nice looking.

Wasn't a personal slam, Monkey. Just a reason some people might not go there. In your setting, yeah, probably not an issue, but if I sold you a 2 ct brilliant sol in a 4-prong, I would never have let you walk out the door without acknowledging that I tried to talk you into something safer.

we had to take out a separate policy on mine. glad we did too b/c i lost my wedding band. thank god i didn't lose my e-ring. i was sad enough to lose the band....
i'm also not an upgrading type of gal. what i've got is what i've got. my MIL and law lost hers and went from 1ct to 5. yeah...... if i lost mine i'd ask them to recreate mine as best they can. i wouldn't want a new ring altogether. maybe MAYBE a tiny bit bigger

All I ever told DH was I liked the "Square" ones. The only reason I know mine is 3/4 of a carat is because he bought me the 1 carat, and my hands are so tiny, that it looked funny and sagged. So we took it back and got the one I have now. Plus he only paid an extra $100 for insurance, and if I lose any diamonds, they'll replace them. I had it fixed a while back, and they resurfaced the whole thing..no scratches anywhere
lori is right about the platinum. my aunt is a jeweler and she said while she knows people prefer platinum she always encourages people to go for white gold simply for the security and durability. platinum might sound cooler and be a bit more colorfast, but depending on your setting white gold is safer. my ring is not deep set and stands up all the way so we went with the white gold. however my band is triple pave so you don't really even see the gold.

I kept my diamond just had it reset, it was just a solitaire. I didn't want to upgrade the diamond my DH picked for me. But I LURV my new setting.
Who cares? There's a Debbie Downer for almost every post...

ditto. every so often I feel like I want to buy a nicer set but then I think about it and realize it's a waste of money (personally, for me).

I know what mine is, only because I lost a stone out of the original setting and it had to be replaced.
Insure your rings, ladies. Mine wasn't covered yet
