Stink Advice from My Local CD Listserv

This is NOT an EF solution, but it seems that lately every board I am on is talking about CD funk and how to get rid of it.  When this woman posted this, there were tons of responses of others who have also had the same great success from classic Tide.

Steph from the CD store Abby's Lane is on our Listserv and she always recommends Tide for those who have stink or rash issues.  I personally haven't tried it yet, but am considering after yesterday when I came home from work, DD smelled like funk, went to change what I thought was a poopy diaper and found my new SmartiPants pocket (used only 5 times) with new FooFoo hemp (only used like 3x) hardly damp and smelling like a zoo.  Anyway, the listserv post about Tide:

Alright, ladies, I have been clinging to my eco-friendly laundry detergents and trying all kinds of crazy wash routines to get rid of ammonia stink (especially in night diapers), all to no avail. I was really reluctant to use Tide, which so many of you recommend, partly because of the perfumes in partly because it's not exactly earth friendly.

After [DD] got a bad diaper rash and ammonia burn, though, I was desperate to try anything, and I borrowed a couple of scoops of Tide Original Powder from [fellow listerv member]. All I can say is WOW! All I have to do is one short prewash to rinse the dirty dipes, then a long, hot regular wash with a scoop of Tide about halfway up to the "1" line, and the diapers are super clean and NOT smelly! Much to my relief, they really don't even smell like Tide perfume. So, there you go, I'm a Tide convert. Mea culpa.

Just thought I'd share this to thank all of you for your recommendations and to maybe help out some other stubborn mamas like me. Oh, I was using Country Save before (which I'll continue to use on my clothes).

  • thanks! hippy and i were just talking about this!

  • Hippy- I may need to borrow a scoop of Tide from you.

I am still very frustrated here :(

  • does it have to be the powder or can it be liquid. (i don't care for powder detergent)
  • Went to the Abby's Lane Web site and she recommends the Original Tide Liquid (and HE for HE machines):

How do I wash my diapers?

...As far as detergents, I use regular liquid Tide.  "Free and Clear" detergents contain waxy products, which may build up on your diapers, hindering their absorbancy, and also lack the ability to really get diapers clean. Overall, natural detergents (seventh generation, biokleen, etc...) just don't seem to cut it with cloth diapers. They lack the stronger cleansing agents and can leave the diapers still soiled after washing.

    IN SHORT:

    For Top Loaders~

    Detergents we love:

Tide original liquid, Country Save, Planet (but you HAVE to do a hot wash and it is best to do a warm rinse, and you still may periodically need to use a stripping method)

    Detergents we "like":

Tide orignal powder, Cheer, Sun, Tide Free, Mountain Green (same as Planet, definately HOT wash, warm rinse and be prepared for periodic stripping) Purex Free and Clear is on this list, but we don't recommend it over Tide Free.

    Detergents we don't like:

Allen's, Dr. Bronners, 7th generation, Era, Gain, Method, Shaklee, any other "free and clear" detergents

Detergents we do not recommend under any circumstances:

    Charlies, Sensiclean, Sportwash

    FOR FRONT LOADERS:

    Detergents we love:

    Tide HE, Country Save

    Detergents we like:

    Tide Free HE, Planet

    Detergent we don't like:

Allens, Any free and clear detergents other than Tide HE

  • they're pretty strong in wording against allen's and charlies!!  jeez!  i will file away the tide info for future reference, thankfully we seem to be doing ok for now...
