Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If your LO didn't crawl by 9 months, come in

DS has not started crawling.  He doesn't seem very interested in it, but more in rolling and scooting to his destinations.  He also does great walking in his walker and "cruising" while holding onto our hands.  I am not concerned (he does wonderful with verbal and fine motor skills), but just wondering if you had a late crawler, when did they begin crawling or did they just skip it all together and go straight to walking?  TIA

  • DD crawled at 9 months, 2 weeks. She started to walk at 11 months.

And friend of mine has a DS who didn't crawl till 11 months and still isn't walking at 14 months.

  • DS didn't start crawling until he was 11 months old. He's still mostly crawling to get around, with some occasional cruising. I'm sure he'll be walking within the next couple of months.

  • DS didn't start crawling until 11 1/2 months.  Just last week (when he turned 1) he finally started full on stomach off the floor crawling all the time versus his army crawling/worming he was doing.
  • He army crawled at 11 months, and started really crawling at one.  My DS was born 7 weeks early though, so maybe that is a factor?  He started cruising at 11 months too, and mostly cruises around the house now.  I think he will start walking in the next 6 weeks or so.
  • When I was in the same boat and everyone would tell me oh if they are really verbal the physical will suffer but I guess it is true in my case. My DD didn't start crawling until 10months. She also loved to just roll and roll. She did start to walk at 13 months so I didn't have to wait long in between. Good Luck on the wait because I know it can be awful to wait!

  • DS didn't crawl until about 11mo.  He started cruising at 13mo and didn't walk on his own until about a week before he turned 16mo.

He's the kind of kid that wants to wait until he knows he can do it and then one day he just does it.

This is exactly what DH and I say about DS. He'll go from zero to sixty in one day. We swear he practices milestones in his crib at night.

  • Emerson started crawling about 10 months-the day we got tubes in her ears.  We're still waiting for her to walk at 14.5 months.

  • She didn't start crawling until the day before she turned 10 months.  At 13 months, she is still just cruising about and is getting more confidence in her walking ability/balance! :)

Maddie started crawling right before she turned 10 mos.  I honestly thought she was going to skip it since she was already cruising, but she surprised me.  She took her first steps at 11 mos exactly and was full on walking on her own at 12 months.  I was starting to worry, but realize she is on her own time table for everything.

  • My DD started crawling and cruising on her 10 month birthday.  Before then she was more than happy scooting and rolling to her destination of choice.  She is now 12 months, 3 weeks and change and is close to walking unassisted, but still uses her walking toys and hands to guide her.

  • Lily just started crawling last weekend. ?I thought she was going to skip it, but then she got up on her knees around 10 months and then it took about 3 or so weeks to turn that into crawling.

9 months is really not "late" for crawling. ?From everything I have read, 10 months is the average. ?

Just remind yourself that while their kids are working on the gross motor skills, your kids is working on other skills...and then when your child starts working on the gross motor skills, their kids are working on the other stuff. ?They all end up in the same place- just get their along different paths. :)

Yes, very good point.  Is that how Lilly was with her skills?  Was she ahead in the verbal and fine motor?

Just post that your son is solving algebraic equations.  That should shut them up.  lol

There are probably lots of babies over there who aren't crawling, but those moms just aren't shouting it from the rooftops.

Maddie crawled around her first birthday.  She still isn't walking yet.

Oh yeah. ? I really notice the difference when she has play dates with other kids who crawled early. ??

From my observations (in my small little world), things seem to start coming together around 2 years. ? ?Edit- ?But even then, every kid is different. ?

The thing is- even if your son does crawl soon, that doesn't mean the questions won't stop. ?Two days after Lily started crawling, my inlaws were already speculating about when she would walk...they think it will be soon...I know better. :)

  • DD started crawling at 12 months and walking yesterday.

  • Ben started walking at 11 months and starting crawling exactly a week after that. I couldn't help being concerned, but he eventually did it in his own time.

Liam waited till 10.5 months to crawl/scoot.  He walked two weeks later at 11 months and never looked back.  He was the "slow" kid at daycare for a long time but now has jumped way ahead.  He too was always very good with the push toys and holding our hands.
  • DD crawled at 11.5 months.  If she weren't crawling at her 12 month appt. we were going to be referred.  Same with walking- which she started at 17.5 months- 2 weeks before the doc was going to refer her for therapy for not walking.  Like pp said, with both skills she went from  zero to sixty.  She ran 2 days after starting to walk!

  • My DD rolled all over and did some army crawling.  She finally crawled on all fours at 12 months and then 2 months later started walking.  I think she only crawled because she my DS crawling (he was 8 months old).
  • DS crawled at one week after he turned one. He just rolled to get everywhere before then. He was cruising along the furniture at almost the speed of a run at that point and now he's walking on his own. No need to worry.

  • DS crawled at10 1/2 months.  He's just taking steps and starting to walk now.  They all do things at their own pace.
  • DD started crawling at 11 months.
