2nd Trimester

What type of bottles are you going to use?

I am going to be bottle feeding my baby.  I was wondering what type of bottles you are planning on using.   Right now we have been looking at the Playtex Drop-ins. I was thinking with the inserts it would help with keeping things sanitized well.  But...I am open to suggestions!

  • Just so you know, our pedi told us we only had to sanitize for the first two months.  She said after that, just general washing is fine.  It may save you some money in the long run if you go with a regular bottle versus a drop-in.  Good luck deciding!

  • I plan to BF, but when we do use a bottle I'm going to try the cheaper ones first. I have a freebie playtex drop in sitting around somewhere, and I put a couple of glass Evenflos on my registry.

I would hate to stock up on expensive ones only to find out that the baby prefers cheap ones. Also, I read that a lot babies will take formula out of the ready-to-feed packaging, which is just like cheap Gerber bottles.

  • I haven't looked into it that much, but I've heard nothing but great reviews about Dr. Brown's bottles. They are supposed to be the best for colicky babies... so I'll probably end up trying those to be "better safe than sorry".
  • We're going to breastfeed, but I'm going to have glass bottles on hand so Daddy and other family members can share the feeding experience now and then.
  • I'm putting my pumped milk in these so husband can get feedings time in too!

We used these with DS, and they are great except they leak VERY easily which gets annoying.  As long as you are only using them at home, they work great, but don't travel anywhere with them.

  • I initially used Adiri bottles with DS, when I was bfing.  I didn't like there 2nd stage (way too fast flow) so I went with drop-ins.  Love them!  Buy generic dropins at Target (my walmart doesn't carry generic ones).  They are BPA free and cheap.  A lot of people like Dr. Browns, but there are a LOT of pieces!  I bought extra nipples and with the dropins, if all your bottles are "dirty", you just switch the nipple and get a liner.  There are some great glass bottle choices out there now too. Just an FYI - Avent bottles leak.
  • I spent a lot of time watching my cousins LO and used the Playtex drop-ins with her and I loved them!  She would not take the silicone nipples so it was very easy to just by new nipples and switch them.  Also buy the genaric drop-ins from target, meijer, etc. (a lot cheaper than the playtex brand).  So this is what we plan on using with our LO as well, such I've had such a great experience with them.

  • I used the advent with my DD and she loved them. I started with the platex drop in and had many spilling issues. ?Baby bargains rates the Advent and Dr. Browns the best!
  • Baby Bargains recommends either the BPA free Avent or Dr. Brown's bottles, and we'll probably go with either of those two.
A regular dishwasher will sterilize bottles really well if you have one.
