TTC: Overwhelmed with all the info

I'm new here & we just started TTC (2nd month) & my DH is an internet info junkie- he looks up everything & in turns tells me all the info that he was found

In short- I am just looking for some good advice/info from people who have been or are there.

Anything will be greatly appreciated Smile

Thanks!!!

Re: TTC: Overwhelmed with all the info

  • first advice- take everything on the internet with a grain of salt Cool

really, though, it's so great that we can be so informed, but it's also a major cause of stress that we don't need. there is such thing as too much information. example: when i was pregnant with #1 i was reading A LOT of stuff on line. sure enough, i can across an article about amniotic fluid leakage. i started to notice more and more that my undies would be wet and i became sure this was happening to me. i called me ob and made an emergency appointment. there is an easy test they can do and in about 3 minutes i found out that i was not, in any way, leaking amniotic fluid. no. i was peeing myself. Confused

so, listen and talk to your OB first and foremost. i think asking other "real people" is also a valuable tool. this board is so nice and helpful and informative. just beware of reading too much, either while TTC or while PG. next thing you know you'll be having sex standing on your head every other Tuesday Stick out tongue but really, good luck with your TTC journey and i hope we can help you.

  • I say quit reading ;-)  I was nervous for no reason about ttc, it took my mom six years so I thought I was automatically going to have problems.  It ended up that I went off bc and got knocked up before we even started ttc - we just weren't careful a couple times the month before we were going to start and oops!  Of course I was freaking out about not having a period the month we wanted to start but finally after being five days late we got the bfp. Life is funny that way so have fun, get educated on the basics and steer clear of making the process too technical unless it is needed later. GL!!
  • Some people like to do the relaxed approach and "try" every other day from around day 8 or 10 until day 16 or 22 or the whole time or whatever - all depends on your cycle length.... just covering bases.

Some people try that for awhile and then start tracking other things to make sure they are ovulating, etc - and some start tracking other things from the beginning.  Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a book that many recommend who are big on charting temps, mucus, etc... but you can also find a ton of info online.  I know some people really like fertilityfriend.com for actively charting.

Try not to obsess over it - easier said than done, though!

  • My advice is to just relax and have fun!  I am a research junkie but there is a fine line between being knowledgable and driving yourself nuts.  Too much pressure is never a good thing.  I charted as our form of bc for two years before we started TTC but when it came time to TTC I tried my hardest to relax and go with the flow.  Good luck!

I agree totally.  It'll make you crazy.  And not just while TTC and through pregnancy.  When I had my first baby, I did so much reading and researching, and asking people's opinions about things, it got to the point where I felt like I wasn't being my own self as a mother.  I wasn't trusting my own instincts.  Putting away the parenting books was one of the best decisions I ever made.  :)

As for TTC, the best thing we can do for ourselves, IMO, is to arm ourselves with the facts, then just take it from there.  And listen to our own instincts.  Don't make yourself crazy.  Then if there are difficulties, you can deal with it when that time comes.

Best of luck, and hope to see you around more!

  • Having been through infertility - don't stress and just have fun for at least 6mo or even a year if you're under 30.

Making sure you know how your body works is a good thing (a lot of very educated women have some confusion about when Day 1 is and other basic information). But other than that... take a vitamin, have sex, and forget about the research for now.

  • After about 6 months, you may want to try charting (temperture) to see when and if you ovulate.  The best time to get pregnant is +3 days prior to ovulation all the way until the day after ovulation.   Definitely get the book the other poster suggested.
