question about purchasing on etsy

If an item I want on etsy is sold out, do I just wait until it's available again to buy it? or do I contact the seller to order it?

sorry if this is a stupid question. I've never bought anything on etsy before.

Most of the time people just don't relist as often because it costs money. They might be willing to make you one too.
