Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone ween from breast to cup around 12 months?

Jack hasn't had a bottle of breast milk since he was 3  or 4 months. I gave him his fist straw cup of milk yesterday, replacing a feeding he drops on his own 50% of the time. Yeah he liked it, but it was pretty messy and he did suck on it like he would a breast or bottle. He sipped it like water at mealtime. I don't know how to get him to go to town. Can you share some tips or advice? My plan is to replace one feeding a week.

  • I started giving DD a sippy of whole milk at 10 mo, with meals only.  She did not ween until almost 14 months (my choice), but really has had no problem taking in lots of milk via sippy.  She is an eater though, she would prefer food to milk where her sister is still the opposite.

  • mine has been dropping feeds - but we do it a little differently - I don't replace the feed with a cup of milk at that time.  I just give her milk through the day adn increase the amount of milk as she decreases feeds.  So now she drinks 12oz of milk throughout the day and nurses once.  she has times where she prefers to drink it adn they do not coincide with her old breast feeds.  i'm just watching her to learn her preferred schedule.
  • We replaced nursing time with sippy cups of whole milk but she's not so into drinking whole milk as she is BM so now we offer her milk throughout the day to try to get her to drink more (she still doesn't take much in so we give her yogurt and cheese too).  Tonight I'm going to try dropping her last nursing session (before bed) by giving her a sippy of whole milk.  We'll see how that goes.  I'm not expecting her to take nearly as much as she does when nursing.
