Homemade fitteds - an insert ?

A friend of mine who is also cloth diapering is making her own diapers.  They are pocket diapers made out of cotton flannel.  She gave me half a dozen as a shower gift.  They are super adorable but I'm curious what I should use to stuff/ insert them.  Any suggestions?  None of the inserts I have already will fit since these are newborn and small size fitteds and my only other pocket diapers are OS diapers with no newborn inserts (all second hand).  Help please.

  • You can use prefolds. =]

  • Well that's the problem, prefolds won't fit.  The pocket is tiny.  Is there such a thing as a contoured newborn insert?  The ones I've seen on Jillian's Drawers look awfully big.

  • Oh, sorry!  I'm not sure.  But I know lots of other ladies on this board are experts at CDs so I'm sure they know. =]

  • Could you get some flat diapers and fold them to fit? You could fold a stack ahead of time. Or you could cut some fabric and prefold them if that is too big or you want a different fabric. Maybe your friend would sew the edges down for you if you don't sew so you don't have to refold them?

how about some towels (regular face towels, or microfiber)? maybe fold them in half to fit the pockets. I had found some at the dollar store that fit when cut in half. the mf does not even need hemming...
  • I believe you can buy newborn contour inserts, I have some of the BG brand, but I use them in size small Happy Heiny pockets and they fit perfectly so they may still be too big for a newborn diaper.  It wouldn't be that hard to make inserts if you sew at all or have a friend who does.  Buy some cheapo microfiber towels and cut them to fit and hem or serge the edge.  Or maybe check Happy Heiny's website because I know they have newborn pocket diapers with inserts that fit them.  I think they are a bit smaller.

  • Try some microfiber towels and fold, fold, fold until they fit?  Or once you figure out what size you need, just run a seam down each of the long sides...
