CDs and NAEYC accredited daycare

Do any of you have your CD'd child enrolled in a NAEYC accredited daycare center? I just talked to the director of my DS's center yesterday about using CDs, and fortunately she is open to the idea, but said that she had to check with NAEYC first before giving me an answer. I looked up the NAEYC guidelines myself, and it seems that they require sposies unless the child has a documented medical need to use cloth. I guess they must think cloth is less sanitary. I don't know why in the world they would think that, but I guess that's a topic for another post. I'm just curious to see how strict this regulation is and if you were able to find ways around it. I would really, really love to switch DS to cloth full-time!

  • I worked at a NAEYC accredited center in high school/college...and I don't remember anything about them requiring sposies....but I also worked there before CDs really made a comeback.

They may have to put each diaper in it's own bag, but you could always have them put those bags in your wetbag and then use a BagEWash system and reuse them until they get holes in them....They also would probably not be able to unstuff pockets, scrape poo or reuse covers

  • i worked in a naeyc center, but this never came up.  usually issue like this deferred to state regs though.
  • Documented medical need just means a note from a Doctor on file with the school.  That shouldn't be that difficult...

Otherwise, you can take the tactic that some of the anti-vaccination people do and tell the school they must sign a waiver stating your child will have no residual effects from using sposies [bleach, chemical, especially since male child, heat build up issues etc.]  Since they can't guarantee the child's health, they won't sign the waiver and you are home free to use CDs.  This is the hardline approach and I don't recommend it if you are not comfortable with confrontation.  You would need to do some real research to put together an appropriate letter for them to sign or refuse to sign...
