Because if GOD FORBID your child be sexually molested by someone and the court calls on your child to testify calling their private parts by "gigi" or other cutesy names and isn't specific with VAGINA then the molestors attorney could say that the person is leading the child to say what they want. Whereas if your child says "He touched my penis" then now way can you say they are leading the child to say anything.

Personally I wont be teaching my son to say penis. It will be his pp or private, something other than penis. I don't want him going around saying penis. I don't even let my oldest say penis or balls (which slips often and I have to get on him) in front of me. It just seems weird to me to have a toddler walking around saying penis or vagina. yes that is what it is called I know but still it just seems weird to me.

Hmm...Sucks that we live in the kind of world where that's even an issue. Yea I didn't think of it that way. We're not teaching DS english yet but the word in our language for penis is pretty specific even though cutesy. There's really no mistaking it.

OMG sometimes I wonder how the world we live in is SO prudish?!!! The words 'penis' and 'vagina' ... 'scrotum', 'labia' etc are NOT dirty words. Why would you not teach your child about the correct terminology for their body parts?

I am sure that at some point my sons will learn that the proper name for their anatomy is penis. In the meantime, we call it his peepee. If at the age of 25 he still is calling it his peepee, then I will get worried.

The proper name for a bottle is "bottle" but we call them baba's because it's cute and it's the extent of his vocab at this point.

Conversely, I have covered molestation trials where the defense said the child was coached because they knew the clinical names. It's not a decision I would make on that basis purely because someone can always argue exactly the opposite.

I'd be more inclined to think a child using the proper anatomical terms was being led, personally.

And this isn't my only reason behind teaching my daughter the proper names. I will teach her the proper names of all anatomy and to the mom who said that we call bottles-"babas" quite frankly I don't baby talk my child.I call a bottle a bottle, a diaper a diaper etc etc. My biggest pet peeve is baby talk after years of nanning through college the mom which baby talked her child her son has a terrible vocabulary and talks baby talk at 7, whereas the mom that spoke clearly and used proper names had a son speaking paragraphs and conversations at 15 months.

What's the reasoning?

It's the same reasoning behind teaching him the words head, hands, feet, toes, arms, etc.

Because that's the name for that body part. To me, it's a no-brainer.

You're deluded if you think that. The jury will assume the parents are lying to back the kid up. I covered a trial for twin girls who were molested by their babysitter (a 50+yo man) for five years. He was acquitted specifically because two jury members didn't believe the girls would talk that way.

Flipside, I saw a 3yo whose parents were both convicted and serving hard time, hopefully with someone who makes them do the same sick crap their kids were made to do. Example: "Daddy made me stick my peepee in the dog's butt."

I guess I just figure my kid is smart enough to figure out over the next few years that there may be multiple words that describe the same thing. i.e mom, mother, mama - currently he uses mama but I imagine eventually it will just be mom as he gets older. Right now he uses the word baba I asume as he gets older he'll call it a cup or a bottle.

I am far from deluded but we could sit her and argue case by case the different outcomes of terminology from child molestation cases. It will always be up to the jury and I can give you a ton of examples where proper terminology put the molester in prison. I think its a choice as parents that isn't a fun choice to think about, but I will teach my child proper terminology. Not for the fact that "What if" but that it's proper terminology of anatomy and developing language skills.

My kids call it penis, vagina, etc because that is what it is. They also call them arms, legs, toes, etc. I personally see no reason to give cutesy nicknames to any body part.

That's totally cool, but that's not the reason you gave. You said 'you didn't want your son saying penis around you.'. Sounds like that's your hang up and you're going to pass that down.
