head shaking

is this normal?

DD is always shaking her head now. I don't think she's saying 'no' b/c she'll do it at very random times, almost as if it's something new she realized she can do and is learning it.

Sometimes she does it when I'm feeding her (solids, in high chair) but she's still opening her mouth, so again - I don't think she's saying 'no'

is this normal?

Re: head shaking

  • I can't remember where, but I just read something about this and how it is normal.  I'll try to figure out where I saw it and get back to you.  Try not to worry!  :)

  • Normal.  DS started doing that at around 8 or 9 months.  By 9.5 months, he had learned that it meant no and used it frequently.  :)  His first real word was no too.  I guess he's an opinionated kid!

Sophie did this, but stopped by her first birthday.  We took her to a neurologist and had an EEG, the dr. said that she's fine, it's called a shuddering attack and they usually grow out of it.  It's a much smaller movement than head shaking though.

  • it looks like head shaknig, not really shuddering

I wonder if she's copying me b/c I shake my head when I say "no" in an attempt to use sign language

    she's 8mo old

  • My son started doing it when he was teething and refusing the bottle.  Sometimes he would even do it when we weren't trying to feed him, but I think he was trying to shake away the pain, if that makes sense.

yes! she's refusing the bottle as well; although her 2 bottom teeth are out already and I dont feel anything on the top

  • My DD does this, and I figured out she does it when she's tired.  I think she's trying to shake the sleepies out of her eyes and stay awake.
