Cross Nursing - anyone seen the new People?

It was the People with Jon from Jon and Kate on the cover.  Anyway one of the stories was about a baby whose mom died shortly after birth and friends, neighbors, strangers (a total of 25 women) stepped in to nurse the baby in diffent shifts.  I know that wet nurses used to be commonly used but I don't think I would be okay with that many people nursing my baby.  I was just talking with DH and I would step in to nurse my sisters baby (too old now but hypothetically) and I would hope she would do the same if able but I don't know about a stranger?!?!

  • taht seems like a lot of infections could be passed.  I dont think that sounds safe.  Its great that all those women want to help, but it doesnt seem sanitary.  Unless they are only pumping for the baby and not actually nursing

  • that's what I thought:/ The women are actually nursing the baby who is now several months old - the dad claims that the mom really wanted to nurse the baby but now they are doing it for the bonding.  IDK seems odd!
  • No way would I want them to do that!  That is a person bonding thing for mommy and baby.  I think it is weird.
  • I did hear about that.  Yowza.  Those mommys made a big sacrafice to leave their babies to nurse another, ya know?

I was happy to donate EBM, but I don't know that I could nurse another baby.

  • I'd have no problem nursing another baby.

I remember reading some stories like that after Katrina - people had no access to clean water or formula (or had run out of their stockpiles and were still cut off from the world) and their neighbors stepped up and nursed their babies.

  • I read this article and I was completely aghast!  This would never even cross my mind and seems soooo weird to me!!!
  • I really wonder if the dangers of exposure to multiple pathogens might outweigh the benefit of mothers milk--not to mention no control over whether any of those women drink, use drugs, are on meds, etc.
  • I would do it for someone else given the right circumstances, but I'd never be comfortable w/someone else nursing my own child
