Top of the stairs baby gate?

We have decided that we want to get a baby gate for the top of our stairs. We would like to keep our dogs upstairs when we have dinner guest over, etc. Since we plan on TTC'ing later this year, we figure we might as well get a good one that we can keep and use for the baby.

I know NOTHING about this stuff!!! Are they just secured like tension rods? Do we have to actually screw hardware into our walls? Are there gates that we can just put up when the dogs/baby need to be secure or does it have to stay on the stairs all the time?

Indifferent

Please recommend your top of stairs gate. Any help is much appreciated!!

Re: Top of the stairs baby gate?

  • I think it probably depends on your stair set-up.  IMO, I probably wouldn't want to put anything secured by tension only on at the top of the stairs.  I would probably be too scared that it could easily get knocked down.  I'm sure a tension set-up would be okay at the bottom of the stairs, though.  (This is just my opinion....I haven't done any "real" homework on the issue.)

I have these two threads bookmarked for whenever we get there...

  • The only gates that I have seen that are labeled as safe for the top of the stairs are mounted into the wall with hardware.
Bottom of the stairs gates can be tension rod mounted.
We chose to have our gate upstairs in a hallway and not at the top of the stairs so we don't have it anchored into the wall but she still has use of the upstairs.  We have a large landing at the top of the stairs.
