Babies: 0 - 3 Months

For those of you who had a LONG induction...

Maybe a dumb question....What do you do with all your time at the hospital??? I am being induced on Wednesday, and they told me to prepare to be there for a LONG time, as I am still 'long and closed' (they need to take baby a week early because growth has slowed :( )

I don't really read anything but magazines (and baby books :))...and I am not sure if they have DVD players at the hospital. Dh and I are wondering how we are going to pass the 48 hours (or more) that it may take for things to even get started...

Re: For those of you who had a LONG induction...

  • I emailed my friends a lot :)  We watched American Idol, I slept a little bit, we talked a lot about how excited we were, listened to music on the computer... it was long and boring though, I won't lie.

  • Call the L&D unit and ask them if they have DVD players. That way, you can at least bring some movies. I wasn't induced but my friend was and she brought a journal - she kept track of what was going on and also finished her pregnancy journal up. Make plans for your friends to visit you. Learn to knit (I'm dead serious....my friend was so bored that I came up with yarn and needles and taught her how to knit!)

I read, tried to sleep, watched TV, hung out with Dh and my sister. It was very boring!
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • My DH was bored and anxious, but I was fine.  I have a pretty high tolerance for boredom though.  :)  We watched a lot of tv, and I encouraged him to take walks, go out and get lunch, and to do other errands.  GL!  It's only boring for a short time and then it gets *really* exciting!  Big Smile

  • I took my laptop so I could get online and so we could watch dvd's on it. We also watched the tv in the room.
  • We watched TV, slept, walked the hallways, read.

  • Early on in my induction we brought out the laptop and watched some of the Arrested Development series.  Played some music from my labor playlist. Looked at wedding photos and honeymoon photos.  But as the day progressed I turned all lights off and just concentrated on breathing because I was having a lot of pressure that I needed to concentrate on relaxing minute by minute.

  • Everybody has good ideas.  I brought a book too but couldn't concentrate to read.  I will say: take the ambien they offer at night.
  • I was there for 4 days (96 hours) and never once took out my books, magazines, ipod. I talked on the phone. Some friends came by and we talked everyday. DH was there and we talked. Doctors and nurses were in the room every hours for 10-15m. DH and I walked a ton, watched tv and napped. It was fun honestly.

EDIT: I just read all the responses and find it funny that I was the only one not bored.

Oh we took our travel DVD player, I think I only watched one movie. DH did not stay the first 2 nights, I took an ambien at 9pm and slept and we started again at 6am the next day.

  • I watched baseball, slept (b/c mine started at night), talked to DH and my Mom a lot, watched random tv. The time seemed to actually go really fast for me. It was 24 hours almost exactly from showing up/starting induction to delivery.
  • I watched a couple movies and read.  By the time the pain started, I wasn't interested in doing anything.

  • We watched DVDs -- How I Met Your Mother -- and played on Facebook for the nine hours before I got pitocin. We brought movies but didn't watch them. Then, I slept off and on while my labor started.

We talked on the phone some, and I brought some cards but we didn't use them. I also read some non-baby magazines to familiarize myself with the outside world. :)

    Good luck!

  • Played online, watched a movie, had an ambien at night to help me sleep, did a lot of sudoku puzzles, had visitors, watched TV in the evening. At one point I wished I had a deck of cards.
