cloth diapers

I am considering cloth diapering and am looking at the gDiapers. ?Have you used them? ?Are they really a PITA? ?How many will I need to start? ?Is there something better/easier/less expensive? ??

I am thinking that I may do disposable diapers the first few months since you go through so many and I will be so exhausted during this time. ?But once we get into the swing of things I would like to do something a little more environmentally friendly. ?Are cloth diapers really any cheaper than disposables?

Sorry for all the questions, I am just dense about this stuff : )

TIA

Re: cloth diapers

  • I'm going with a service. You can find one in your area on this site - https://www.diapernet.org/locate.htm.

I haven't heard good things about the gDiapers.

Edit - Sorry - I compared the cost of the service compared to the cost of disposables at Costco. It was significantly cheaper for me. Cloth with the service is going to run me about $1000 for the first yr.

  • The Eco Friendly Family board is awesome for this info, that's where I got mine!  I've heard bad things about G Diapers, but cloth diapers have come a long way and are more like disposables in style and convenience (minus the washing part)
  • I've researched this quite a bit.  We've decided to go with gDiapers and use seventh generation brand disposables at first, and while traveling.  Here's what I've found in my research:

Cloth diapering using a diaper service would be the cheapest option for us.  Just under $80/month for 70 diapers a week. That includes everything drop off/pick up, lined basket, deoderizors for the basket, etc.

I have a friend who uses gDiapers and she said at first they were a little tricky to get used to, you have to make sure you get them snug in the crease of the thigh or they leak, and if you put them on too tight the snap from the liner can leave an indent in the skin, but after she got used to them she said they're great!  The inserts run just a bit more expensive then huggies or pampers, and you still have to buy the outer shells.

We chose Seventh Generation brand disposables because of the chlorine free, environmentally friendly, but they are more expensive, about $12.00 for 40 newborn size.

Um, no. You can't, not in most stores. Not real cloth diapers. Cheap pieces of polyester crap from gerber made to look like old fashioned cloth diapers - yes. They do sell Bumkins online, which are modern cloth diapers, but they are not highly rated by most cloth diaper users.

My DD is almost completely potty trained. I've spent about $500 on cloth diapers. I'll maybe spend $100 more on baby #2, and even most of that is completely necessary. So yes, very much cheaper than disposables.

gDiapers are not actually cloth diapers. And they'll cost you more than either regular disposables or cloth diapers.

Go look at The Eco Friendly Family board where the cloth diaper users hang out.

Cheap pieces of polyester crap from gerber are still cloth diapers.  I don't use 'em so I wouldn't know about their quality.

  • There are lots of sites you can buy cloth dipes from...some that offer sample packs of different brands to help you decide which is best for you. I've used the bumgenious brand pocket style and they are really easy to use and even my DH was ok with using them for a friend of ours. We've also used some other All In One types...the pocket styles were a little easier to wash/dry, because they have less layers to rinse and dry.

Here are a couple sites I've found about cloth diapers:
    https://www.diaperswappers.com/
    https://www.simplewondersdiapers.com/

Also you can buy many on https://www.etsy.com made my DIY-ers. There are also patterns out there you can make yourself. Its not too hard, I've done it myself and it was tricky, but gotten easier as I did more.

The EFF board and even the Multiples board has lots of tips about cloth diapers.

Another thing about cloth diapers is that they are reusable! You can reuse them from one baby to the next and even let friends use them while you're not. A lot of people will buy them used too because their preferences change for the diapers or different kinds work better for them.

I heard that Target sells the Bumgenious brand too for between $15-20/a diaper.

Sorry this post is so long, I hope it helps a bit. :-)

  • Gdiapers have their problems and I would never use them as my only diaper. I use them only in emergencies. BRU does not sell high quality cloth diapers. Right now I mainly use BumGenius diapers although I also love fitters and the new GroBaby diapers.
  • I think we're going to be using the bum genius all-in-one cloth diapers. They are expensive, but they seem to be the best option for us.

  • I had a BIG talk about this with a woman here who sells cloth diapers. She said a couple things that are very relevant to your questions:

     1) G-diapers costs AS MUCH as disposibles. So while they are somewhat better for the environment, not any cheaper. Although, my friend loves them!

    2) DON'T buy all the diapers now, she said to get a few of each and disposibles, and to try them out a couple times before deciding which brand to commit to. She said all babies' bodies are different and dif diapers fit them better or worse.

    3) Cloth are cheaper than disposibles in the long run

I am looking at bumgenius (some models available at Target but all available at online stores) and fuzzybunz (available for online ordering). My boss used fuzzibunz and LOVED them, the snaps make them highly adjustable, and I worry somewhat about the velcro in the bumgenius wearing out so I like the idea of snaps. These two seem to be the best rated and I will choose among them once I get to try them out on my little one. Good luck! Oh and do you have a good washer and dryer??

  • I was looking into them too, and DH told me no way in hell will he use cloth.  He did with 2 of his 3 kids and said they were horrible and leaked all the time.  So I'm not sure what we're doing.  I need some ammo to get him to change his mind.

  • I'm using cloth diapers!  Unfortunately BRU does not sell anything very quality which is why many people have bad impressions of cloth diapers, and most good cloth diapers are bought online.  However, many stores have great trial programs.

Here is a neat one, a 21-day trial for $10:

I was thinking about doing something like that, but got sucked into research and have already bought a bunch of diapers.

Gdiapers are an alternative... but are more expensive than disposables.  Cloth diapers are definitely cheaper for the most part, and get cheaper the more you use them.

  • we use gdiapers and love them... they do have a learning curve, but once you get it you get it ...

they will cost you as much as disposables, but are argubly the best enviro solution (esp if you do as we do, and compost the pee ones and only flush the poo ones).

we bought some cotton prefolds and use them in the g-pants when we're home, and when it's pretty clear she's in pee mode, in an effort to cut down on the number of flushables we're buying...

and, one of the best things about gdiapers is the company... you can call them and they'll actually answer your questions - about leaking, flushing, etc.

I get really sick and tired of all these "I haven't heard good things about them" posts... it's very "well, my sister's friend's boyfriend's cousin's milkman used them when babysitting and says they're icky."  Talk to people who actually use them, and you'll hear very different things...

on that note, there's a great Yahoo group of gdiapers users... check them out.
