Help! How to get rid of cat pee?

My stupid cats peed in DD's playroom. We have carpet in there, shaggy carpet too. I shampooed it once and it still stinks really bad! So bad I have to open the windows just to go in there. Also its an open loft type room upstairs so I can't shut the door to keep the cats out. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the pee smell?

ETA: I can't tell exactly where it is either w/o sticking my nose in the carpet, literally. Her whole room just generally stinks of cat pee. Something I can use over a large area?

  • We use OdorMute. Its much less expensive. You can buy it from pet stores in a powdered form. Then you add it to water. Its an enzyme cleaner. It breaks the pee down into its component parts and it dries up and doesn't stink anymore. The thing about it is, you do actually have to get on your hands and knees and sniff. The stuff has to actually hit all the pee.

Also, the drying process is really important. It has to dry quick enough. So, put a fan on it or something to speed the process.

or if you need something really strong  https://www.gotpee.net/

Use a black-light to find the peed on areas.  Any organic stain will glow.

Thanks! Looks like I'll be going to Petco today.

  • natures miracle or other enzyme cleaner.  don't tr y to clean it with anything else first...that can make it worse. you also have to really soak the area...like pour it, don't spray it.
  • Honestly the best thing for animal pee is vinegar I put vinegar in where the shampoo goes smells of vinegar for about 12 hours then no more smell. ?You could also get natures miracle but it works so well.

  • Also, take the cats to the vets ASAP to make sure you're not dealing with an UTI/blockage.

Thanks, I know I'm not. I'm a dumb pregnant lady and I shut the door to their litter boxes overnight! Stupid me.

I once got some odor neutralizing spray from my vet when my cat had a UTI and decided to tell me by peeing in the middle of my bed while I was sleeping, so it saturated my mattress.  I used it on some carpeting, too, and it worked like a charm.  I also weirdly sprayed Fabreze on a piece of luggage (about ten years ago) and it's never smelled like cat pee again.  I still use it all the time.  (That time I had accidentally shut my cat into the closet with the said piece of luggage--so I'm getting your predicament 100%!!)
