Good books to help grandma-to-be learn the new ways?

My mom is totally baffled by the way things are done these days. She thought swaddling was the silliest thing ever and had NEVER heard of anyone not covering up the baby with a blanket in the crib when they go to bed. HELP! Has anyone come across a book specifically to help grandparents-to-be learn the new techniques to how differently things are done now??  My mom is reallllly hard-headed so I'm trying to think of a way to help show her, and pretty much, it needs to be written in a book for her to believe it! lol Thanks for your help!

  • a book seems a bit passive aggressive and then you are counting on her to read it

Cant you just say this is how we do things?  and explain why when you tell her?

  • What about bringing her to a hospital class with you?
  • I already tried to explain a few things to her, by showing her this little swaddle type gown for the baby that I wanted & that's when she thought it was the crazies thing ever. lol  She reallly has to be the most hard headed person, she thinks that just because things were done a certain way back in the day & that since she did that with her children that doing it any other way seems stupid. : )
She LOVES to read, that's why I figured a book would be best.. ??
  • I would just tell her and if you don't trust her don't leave your baby with her.
  • I rather liked baby 411. give that a try.
  • Oooohh yes this sounds like my mother.  It baffled her that you don't put babies to sleep on their tummies.  If it's not the way she did it, then it's wrong.

I like the idea of taking her to a class with you at the hospital.

ditto this...your baby, your rules...if she doesn't like them or thinks they are silly because she didn't do them with her kids...then she doesn't get to babysit....

  • Thanks for the advice everyone!
  • I want to ditto the hospital class.  A huge hospital here in STL offers grandparent classes called the Joy of Grandparenting.  In these classes they touch on the newest safety and nutrition issues and they also tour the labor and delivery and mother - baby units.
