Clothing for the plus sized and pregnant

Angry So a pregnant girl at work had on an adorable top and I asked her where she got it. She said Kohls. So I call Kohls and ask if they have plus sized maternity. Some young kid on the phone says, "uummmmm...I think so....I mean...we have womens..."

"Well, can you find out please?"

I wait for a good 5 minutes and someone else gets on the phone. I ask my question again, " Ummmmm...yeah. We have size 16."

I was so angry. I said "Well women come in sizes bigger than that, Honey!" and I hung up. Blame it on the hormones but I was pissed.

What is it? Does mainstream America think that we just don't get any? They must because I have not been able to find plus sized maternity clothes in any store I've entered into. Yes, I know you can buy them online, but that means that I don't get to try them on. They may suck. Then I go through the hassle of sending them back and trying to find something else. Let me correct one thing: I found a rounder or two of plus sized maternity clothes at Target. A rounder or two! Other women get a whole section. At Motherhood Maternity, BBWs get a whole rack of clothes. Poor quality clothes that are worn out after the first couple of weeks. This is really pathetic America.

Big girls -

What are you doing for clothes these days? Just moved up a size? Buying stretchy non maternity clothes?  Have you found that store that actually has quality plus sized maternity for a reasonable price? Please, help a sister out!!!

  • How frustrating, I'm sorry!

I'm not plus sized, but a good friend of mine is.  She said she got all her maternity clothes at Lane Bryant and Motherhood.

Do you have a Destination Maternity near you?  They sell Motherhood stuff, but it's a much nicer store.  The one by me seems to have a pretty large plus sized section (much, much larger than one rack).

I agree Motherhood stuff is questionable quality, but I've found that with ALL the maternity clothes I have -- including the more expensive ones (Gap, Japanese Weekend).

  • I was a size 20 before I got pregnant.  But I went to Old Navy and bought a bunch of tops in their section.  I really like the tank tops.  But unfortunately, you definately get what you pay for.  Some of the quality isn't fantastic, but it wasn't too expensive.  Then I went to a maternity store that we have in Canada and found some maternity pants with a big elastic.  I found that moving up a size only works with skirts that have elastic bands.  It also works with some tops, especially if you layer it with a tank.  I agree with you that the whole process is really frustrating.  I wish I could easily buy a bra in a store.

  • I just moved up sizes.  I've embraced the tighter fitting tops now too because I find they actually look better than anything that is free flowing.  Free flowing = tent like.

I just received a gift card for Motherhood maternity and I am worried.. I checked their website and everything that looks nice is for the smaller women.  Their plus size section does not have nearly as many options or cute styles, which angers me to no end.

I wish I had more advice for you.  But as I said before, I just move up sizes.

  • I'm sorry you're having a hard time finding clothes. Kohl's does carry some XL maternity but it's a little snugger than true plus-size.  That said they do have a plus size department that goes up into the 20s.  I have a couple of pre-pregnancy shirts from there in my pre-preg size and they work ok but at this point aren't long enough.  Buying bigger didn't work for me because it's just big all over and does nothing for my shape.  The Motherhood near me has an entire plus size section up to 3x in stores which I've found to be pretty good.  Sure the quality isn't great but it's about the same as Target.  I've ordered some nicer tops from JC Penney, I find that it's really not that big a deal for me to order online, in fact I probably prefer it so long as I can return in store if necessary.  That scratches Old Navy which requires mail in returns but even so I've had good luck with Old Navy too -- I think their shirts run a little big and the pants a little small.  Good luck.

  • Lane Bryant clearance racks have been my bestest friend. I'm short (5'1") with very narrow shoulders and I find anything plus sized maternity is just too large everywhere. I've been able to get away with 20/22 empire waisted tops and fabric tape to keep the shoulders in place. Pants...well that's another story! Don't even get me started on bras as I have put this off and am terrified of looking although my regular one needs to be put out of its misery.

  • Most of my tops are from either the gap or old navy. I fit into their 2x maternity stuff mostly. I was a 20-22  before I got pregnant.

I am also 5'11 so pants have been a nightmare for me, they are all too short. I have one pair of jeans from motherhood that were long enough, then I jsut went up a size in non maternity pants until about 3 weeks ago. Now the size up, isn't cutting it for me, i hate the pants under my belly I feel so exposed.

I have lived in dresses for the last few weeks and honestly wish I would have sooner.

I have a few dresses from this site  in the casual dress section. I bought them last year before I was pregnant and honestly they looked like crap then, they made me look pregnant. I was lazy about returning and still had them in my closet. Now they make me look pregnant and I get so many compliments on them. I guess I kind of lucked out that I had them. Totally makes my belly look kind of cute, which I never thought it did before.

  • JC Penney has been a god send for me. I do end up buying mostly online since their plus size options are greater there than in the store, but the clothes are well made and affordable. I'm sitting here in a JCP shirt and pants right now.
