3rd Trimester

Bleeding nipple at 34 weeks (maybe TMI)

So I admit it, the first time my nipples leaked I was freaked out, and fascinated.  Every once in a while I squeeze them to see if they'll still ooze a bit, and this morning in the shower I noticed that one was BLEEDING!  A little painful, but it was like the never-ending trickle.  It looked like a small, tastebud-looking thing just ripped off.

This is probably a long shot - but has anyone else had this happen?  Luckily, I had some breast pads from a friend so I just tucked one in after the bleeding seemed to stop...but still!

Or...am I just a freak ;)

Re: Bleeding nipple at 34 weeks (maybe TMI)

  • I had this last week and I called my doc straight away. They did an ultrasound on my breast, and finally a mammogram because the breast tissue is so dense when you are pregnant and it is hard to see anything. Chances are it is just an irritation of some sort and it usually turns out to be nothing, however if I were you I would call my doc just to be on the safe side. Don't let it freak you out though, I went straight into the deep end for nothing with mine!!!

  • I had this happen to me (only a little bit of blood though) after I think I had what they call a milk blister (I looked it up on the internet and it matched the description exactly) that broke in the shower.  It was an extremely painful blister and thankfully the pain went away after the blister disappeared and it healed.  If you continue to bleed though I'd call the doc :-)  GL!

  • Was it from the actual nipple, or the areola?  You may need to get some cream to stop the cracking.  I noticed cracking (but no bleeding) and was able to reverse the dryness with the cream.
  • Thanks ladies - my next appt. is tomorrow, and the bleeding has stopped, so I'll bring it up then.  It doesn't hurt, but it did totally freak me out.  Seems like milk blister might be the answer...

When you say cream, do you mean like the Lansinoh type cream?

I've been having problems with dryness & cracking so I would love to know a rememdy. :)
