The carriers are great, but get really heavy when your LO gets bigger. I made DH carry DD because she's already 16 lbs and only 4 months! We have the Snugride that goes up to 22lbs, but I don't think we're going to use it when she gets to 22lbs.
I have the Chicco Keyfit 30 and have been very happy with it. My DD was born weighing 9lbs 14 ounces and was almost 17 pounds at 4.5 months. It works great for us!?

I have the Snugride 32 and it is HEAVY. We don't carry DS around in it much, so it's not too much of a problem... but I definitely wish we'd purchased a lighter one -- especially when you add my almost-20-lb baby to it. I can hardly carry him from the car to the house -- and I'm not a weakling. Add a diaper bag on my shoulder to the mix & it's a major challenge.
I have the snugride32 and I love it. Tillie is only about 8lbs at one month though. I like that it will last until she's 32 lbs, so I won't have to buy another carseat until then.
Also, just because a baby is in an infant carrier doesn't mean you have to carry them around in it. If your baby is too heavy to carry in it at 6 months, just treat it like the convertible carseat you would transfer them to!

I agree with this. Just because it's portable doesn't mean it has to be. Use it for as long as it's convenient. Eventually you'd have to go to something that doesn't just lift right out anyway. That being said we have the regular Chicco (22 lb.) and it doesn't matter how much the weight limit goes to since add your baby into it and it's going to be heavy no matter what! Our seat weights 9 lbs. just by itself (I think that's what I read)...imagine adding a 32 lb. kid in there and yeah, we'll be leaving it in the car way before then!
And don't forget the height of your child is equally as important as the weight limit.
I read the title of your post and thought, umm yeah I'd strongly recommend a carseat. Lol! I am tired today.
We have the smaller Snugride, but my LO was just a tiny peanut when he was born (6 lbs 2 oz). We got the smaller one since it was a little lighter. I have only rarely taken it out of the car since DS was about 2 months old. When we go places I will pull it out to put it in the snap-n-go stroller or I take him out and put him in a wrap. I have never taken the car seat out and tried to carry him very far in it. Now that he's 4 1/2 months and over 15 lbs there is no way I am going to try.
There is no reason to get the bigger infant seat, really. Well before they reach the weight limit on even the smaller ones you won't want to keep carrying them around in it, and you will probably want to move them to a convertible by then. I would just save yourself some money and some space and get the regular snugride that goes to 22 pounds.
