Re: Have you thought about birth control post-babe?

  • I WOULDN'T do Mirena again. I paid so much for it, because insurance didnt cover much, and after one year, it got ripped out during sex!!! Pain agony blood, All of the above! My OB said that was the first time she had ever seen that happen. It effin hurt

I've been worried about this too. I used to have the patch. Could you afford that one? It wasnt too bad, just alittle ugly. :) I was thinking of trying Nuva Ring, but I have a TMI question... If you SO is on the large side, will he feel it during sex?

I hated to ring..It felt really big!  One size does not fit all!!! I could totally feel it during sex..Hated it!  I want to go to an IUD but I want to have another baby in a couple of years so I will need to ask my dr about that...

If I do anything it will be the pill... DH and I are anticipating we'll want to TTC again as soon as the doc says it's ok.

This is a discussion we really need to have. We hate condoms, I'm planning to BF, and I don't trust the mini-pill at all (my sister got pregnant with my niece while on the mini-pill!)

I wouldn't be heartbroken if we got pregnant again quickly, but our bank account might be.

  • This will be my last child... so i figure i will be getting my tubes tied or the essure procedure. My body can't handle anything with extra hormones.

Blair-- what kind of side effects came from NuvaRing? I've been on pills and depo and they all make me sick. So I've been thinking of an IUD... I haven't looked into the NuvaRing...

    I loved it.

The only side effects were less lubrication.  umm..yeah.  But KY fixes that in a flash.

My body worked really well with it, so I left it in for 4 weeks, pulled it out & put another in for 4 weeks.  So I only had 6 periods per year.  It was awesome.

That sounds like something I need to try. If lubrication is the only problem... that's alright because I never ever ever want to have sex again... Wink

  • I'm just going back to the pill every night before bed. Generic is crazy inexpensive at Wal-Mart and the pill actually helped me a lot instead of having negative side effects.

  • I got pregnant on the mini-pill.  If DH wasn't going to get a vasectomy, we'd be using condoms.
  • I'm thinking that it will be mini-pill for BF purposes.  I'm not wild about going hormonal, but I'd be to worried about sleep times and other irregularities to do FAM right away, and we're still discussing if/when more kids. :-p

  • I also loved NuvaRing - why take a pill once a day when you can do the ring once a month?  Plus, it's way better to have hormones delivered locally than systemically.

But, I'll breastfeed, so probably mini pill.

  • I LOVED NuvaRing.. unfortunately, it is very expensive on my current insurance ($45)... I miss how it was only $12 a month at my university....?

?I thought about doing the Implanon thing. That is the BC that is put in your arm and stays for 3 years or until you have it removed. I wonder if my insurance would cover it? We're CERTAINLY meeting the deductible this year!!?

I have thought about it a lot. I really don't want to do the pill again. I just can't do the whole everyday rembering thing. Thats why Addison is here actually...lol

Maybe I'll ask about the NuvaRing. Thats once a week right??? I also thought about the IUD but I do want to get preggers in just a few years so I'm not sure if that is good for that. I def. don't want another baby until Addision is 18 months or two yrs old.

You could do an IUD still.  I only had mine in for a year and decided we wanted to start TTC again and had it pulled.  It was worth it, even for that year, since I got pregnant on the mini pill and BFing.

I'm trying to decide between an IUD and the depo shot...but I haven't really given it too much thought.  DH and I have also discussed a vasectomy...he was going to get one several years ago and his boss wouldn't give him the time off he needed, lucky for me!  I'm pretty sure this is the only one I'm having, as DH has 2 from a previous marriage, so Connor makes 3.

    We practice Natural Family Planning.

Do you do NFP or FAM?

If you're doing FAM, how will you manage if the babe keeps you up & down at night?

I did FAM for about a year to avoid and then to TTC, & loved it, but I'm not sure I'd feel confident enough if I'm up & down all night with HJ.

NFP, we took a training class through CCL.org  It was a TON of info, but the couple we learned with was great!  We figured out there's only about 1 week during the month we needed to abstain and the rest was a free for all.  It took us a few months to get the tracking down to a pattern, but once we did, it was easy.  You can buy the material and do an at home study too.

  • Oh yeah, it's also complicated by not trusting the mini-pill and DH being a big baby about condoms.  It really feels like there is no good answer.

I was on the mini pill before we TTC (regular BCP elevated my blood pressure so it was my only pill option). Since you can take that while breast feeding, I'll go back to that.
  • imagePennylane824:
Wait, we're supposed to go back to having sex after the baby?

    LOL!

  • I am going to do an IUD.  No pills to worry about taking and they are good for 5 years.  There are still hormones associated with it but way more convenient (and fun) than condoms!

  • I'm REALLY hoping DH will get a vasectomy...but he seemed pretty freaked out when I brought it up.  He already has a daughter and I'd like this to be our last kid.  If he doesn't agree to the vasectomy, I'll likely have my tubes tied during my c-section.

  • I will get the Mirena IUC. I had it before and loved it.

  • I have never been on the pill, it kind of freaks me out. We will go back to using condoms.

  • The BC I've been on in the past (Ortho Tri and then Allesse) always exacerbated my migraines, so we'll be using natural family planning (which is what we've done for the past three years or so).

FWIW, my sister also got pregnant while on the mini pill (she was also an exclusive breastfeeder at the time).

  • I'm open to whatever happens.  I'll be breastfeeding, which may prevent the return of AF, may not.  If I got pregnant again really quickly, I'd be fine with that.
  • I loved the NuvaRing.  We are actually going to let what happens happen, right after this one so I am not much help.  My sister gets the shot 4x a year but I don't know how much that would cost.  I'm for anything that doesn't require remembering to take a pill every day.

  • I haven't seen anyone mention the diaphragm on this thread--are those still available?

I hate hormonal birth control, and I did NFP for 6 months before TTC, but I'm nervous about it while getting up to breastfeed during the night. We don't want another child for at least 2 years.

I thought the diaphragm or cervical cap but maybe i am hopelessly out of touch!

  • Probably Natural Family Planning. We want to TTC again when we get the "ok" from my Dr and when we feel ready.....no rush though!?
  • I am 99.9% sure this is going to be our last one.  Right now I am leaning toward an IUD until we clear up the .1% in question and then DH will get a vasectomy.  I was on the depo shot for the 4 years between the time DD was born and when we started TTC.  It was very effective but it took over a year for my periods to come back.
  • I had taken the pill for over 10 years, and it took us 2.5 years to conceive.  I also plan on breastfeeding.  So, for those two reasons I do NOT want to go back on any form of hormonal contraception.  We'd like to have another baby in two to three years.  We both hate condoms, so that's out.  I've also heard quite a few horror stories about IUDs.  I think I'm going to talk to my OB about being fitted for a diaphragm.  That seems like the simplest solution to me.  I'm actually surprised that no one else mentioned this option.
  • We won't use any BC.  We'll be beyond thrilled to have an "oops".  I don't see us ever being able to get pregnant without IVF, so I don't see us ever preventing in the future.
After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!

  • Condoms all the way.
  • I haven't been on the pill in years.. we were using condoms before getting pregnant, and will probably do that again (along with some modified charting I think).

  • I have never been on the pill and won't ever be on the pill or any other form of birth control. It's just not something I want to do. DH and I have been together for 10 years. Before we were married, we just used condoms and that worked. After we got married (Aug 2007), we stopped using condoms and whatever happened, happened. I think after the baby, we'll use Natural Family Planning and maybe condoms, we'll see. We haven't had the convo yet.

  • We used FAM and condoms before I got pregnant and will do the same afterwards. I'm planning to breastfeed as well, but that's not a 100% guarantee, of course...
  • Yep, we will use condoms until my husband goes for the big V.

Yes he will.  My DH is larger than most, (we always had to use the magnum (sp?) because the regular ones were so tight they'd kill his erection) and I was on the Nuva Ring pre pg.  He could feel it, but after about a week, he said that he learned to tune it out and it didn't bother him anymore.  He did get a sore from it once though when we went for a really long time.

B/c of my MTHFR, I'm not allowed to use BCP anymore so idk what we're doing to do...  We're thinking charting and condoms, but I sure hate that idea.

This may have already been answered, but I was afraid I'd forget to answer if it hadn't so, no, you change the nuvaring once a month.  Put it in after your period week and take it out before the next one.  The patch is once a week though.

  • We have never been good at BC!  The hormone stuff screws with my body, we tried NFP and the pull out method, which worked good for us.  But since we're on #3 and we are for sure done DH is getting the big snip-snip next month!!!  No more BC for me!
  • I haven't been on bc since I was 20yrs old, my hubby will get a vasectomy. Even though he told me he is holding off on now that I am having another girl.
  • The first time around, I found that a non-sleeping baby was pretty good BC. Well, that plus a 6-month deployment. Smile

This time around, I suspect DH will be getting a V. Since he performs them, I know he's not scared.

  • I'll definitely be using the mini pill while I bf, and then back to my seasonale afterward.... I love not having a period every month.
