Ready to feed formula

How long can you keep a bottle out of the fridge before feeding? If I have the bottles pre made and in the fridge, can I bring one to bed with me and let it come to room temp while sleeping? It would be out of the fridge for like 4 or 5 hours.. Is this a stupid question?  I know that once DD starts feeding it only has a shelf life of an hour, but what if she hasn't?  And what do people do if they are going to be out all day and need to bring a bottle with them?

Re: Ready to feed formula

  • I was once told by a NICU nurse that a bottle that hasn't been fed is safe for 4 hours at room temp.

I use powdered formula, so I can't really help with your second question.  I put the premeasured powder in a formula dispenser and bring bottles of water, then mix it when he is ready to drink it.

With ready to feed, I think you'd have to buy those individual 4 oz bottles or keep the pre-made bottles in an insulated bag/cooler.

It's only good for an hour at room temperature.

I have an insulated pack thing that fits a couple ice packs and I will keep a couple ready made bottles in there (DD will take them cold) or if I am going to be gone longer I take the powder can, empty bottles, and bottled water and mix it when I need it.

  • I think it is just an hour. We get one ready change him and then feed. We just take ice packs in a soft sided ice chest (built into the diaper bag). Then run warm water over the bottle. Or we can take a premade bottle that was bought ready made like they gave us in the PICU. We have only taken him to the pediatrician so far though so its not been whole day thing.

  • 1 hour??  I take it out of the fridge (very cold) and let it come up to room temp for sometimes as long as 4 hours.  I've been doing this for forever now.  I thought it was the same as BM.
  • I was told 2 hours is ok..., but 2 hours tops!
