I typed out a long explanation of why I hate that phrase, but here's the shortened version. I am a nanny and get this phrase all the time when I give my professional opinion.
I don't say to my hairstylist, "You'll understand when it's your own hair". Or to my dentist, "You'll understand when it's your own teeth". You hired me for a reason, give my advice a little credit!

Teachers and nannies are duly filing this away for future use...
I get that all the time. I have 3 god children who I am actively around. Even their mother says " wait til you have your own it will be different.." She things I am gonna turn into this mountain of blubber who can't say no.
i used to be a K teacher (i am early childhood certified) and i agree with it 100% when it comes to giving a professional opinion --- but from the average person who has no kids doling out advice - i have to say - i do agree that often it is VERY different when you have your own lol
Even DH and I know that things we say we'll do with our child might change. We have a little book that we have been writing down our parenting "advice" for ourselves - since we got married --- just so we can look back at it and see if we actually followed it ourselves.

my dad used that line on me when i was talking to him about what a hypocritical asswipe he was and i went off on him.
i HATE that line
Glad I'm not the only one.
